Well guys i dont know anything at all about trucks. My dad has had a 1984 f250 truck sitting in some bushes for a few years. I asked if i fixed it could i have it and he said yes. Well i popped the hood and found out its a 4.9 litre straight 6...
How much horsepower does it have...
What speeds should i shift for redline...
How many foot pounds of torque...
Whats the maximum payload...
What does it run in the quarter mile... Its a 4 speed manual...
If I remember correctly the '84 300ci Inline 6 (4.9L) has 140-145 horsepower, I don't exactly remember the torque either but I think it's around 270-280 lb-ft.. I looked through the manual for my '84 and it wasn't in there.
Now, according to the book here's your shift speeds:
During acceleration
4 speed manual w/o overdrive 4x2 and 4H:
1 to 2: 10 mph
2 to 3: 15 mph
3 to 4: 25 mph
Deceleration Maximum Safe downshift speeds:
4 to 3: 55 mph
3 to 2: 30 mph
2 to 1: 0 mph (yes, zero)
Shifts with a 300 should occur around 2500-3000 rpm or less. The 300 makes its power down low, no need to wear it out revving it up.
Payload:
Look on the driver's side door rear pillar. There should be a sticker there with the info you're looking for. Subtract the weight of the truck from the amount listed to the right of the GVWR rating. That will be your payload.
The 300-6 is not a speed demon, so don't be upset when it's quarter mile is around the 20-22 second mark, however it is a very good work engine. It has a lot of low end torque and so towing shouldn't be a problem for you. When properly maintained, a 300 will last 300,000 to 400,000 miles. I hope I helped you out some, good luck.
Lol 22 seconds.... I figured it would be bad but DAMN!
But if i were to race a car and the other car broke down i know i could tow it... And thats cool
By the way the problem is brake lines... All rusted through... I got them all off and will put them on tommmorow.... One thing i love is how easy it is to work on. Unlike the damn honda.
A race you can win if you are challenged and they tell you when and where and your rules: Select this "type" of race: hook a chain between his rear bumper and your rear bumper. Then who ever makes it across a line on their side first wins. You'll win hands down, that is, unless they have a V8.

even oif they have a big v8 you mak eyour peak torque at like 2000-2500 rpm's they need to get up to liek 4000. your gonna win. and besides its got jsut as much torque as their v8 does. its great truck work with it some. it can do a mean burnout.
Now the 300 six can be a mean top end motor too. I have put a 67 300 six head on my truck. ITs got a big 9" ford in teh rear (dont know what gears) but with the talegate down it will run about 125 mph (camaro was behind me with a accurate speedometer mine dont work) with the 1 bbl carb
the head and the straight pipe are the only mods doen to it. but it will be getting a 4bbl carb and the dual exhaust and prolly 4.11 if i dont have them. Dont worry the 300 six sounded like it wanted to fall apart. Also is that 4 speed a Granny low 4. Cause if it is get ready to pull about anyone u want and some houses. I watched a man with a 300 six an f-250 and a 4 speed granny low 4x4 pull a house trailer up a good steep hill. Also on the pulling contest mw said about its quite fun...but watch out for those 460s theyre mean as the 300 six but with more top end.
Any more questions ill try to answer em the best i can. And thats it for me

1981 F-150 300 six and 4 in teh floor project "I see that camaro wanna race" Parts needed Exhaust manifold (split) Intake for 4bbl and cam
Parts wanted 4.11 gears and a granny low 5 speed
I have 31 10.50s on my truck and it does relitivly well in the mud. now you aint ognna be able to climb a muddy hill like a 4x4 can but u can make it up it if u can keep your foot to the floor and get a run at it. And does that truck have a 9 inch rear end(to tell does it have a cover on the back of the rear end)
You could make one heck of a pre-runner out of it since it is a 4x2.
Mud, snow, sand, just about anything you encounter, as long as you get a running start, you can go right through it with the 300.
Here's what I would do. Put a 3" or 4" suspension lift on, then add a 3" body lift, put some low gears in the back, put some skid plates on, a decorative rollbar in the bed with 5 KC Daylighters on it, a few engine mods, a good set of tires, and you'll be ready for some Chevy-whoopin' action.

the nine inch will not have a rear cover, it's a nodular design which means that the "pumpkin" pulls out of it, makes for easy gear swaps. if it has a cover, i'd figure it's a dana, probably a dana 44. anyone who knows more than me please correct if i'm wrong.
