So I'm looking at a local truck for sale and I was wondering what you guys think and any common problems or things specific to this truck that I should look for.
That's either a 61 or 62 grille, can't tell from the blurry pictures. The turn signals should be in the header panel below the hood on a 65 or 66. Look for rust on the back of the cab towards the bottom, the drip rails, and the cab mounts. The bed floor up near the cab is also a common place for rust. Others will chime in here for more things to look for. If it's relatively rust free and the drivetrain is decent, the asking price may not be too far off.
Adding to what Jeff said, price doesn't appear out of line, but the truck is a mutt (pieced together). Doesn't have to mean anything bad if all work was done correctly.
Also check Core support! they rust out pretty bad sometimes? and floor pans! another place is the edges of the floor where it meets the kick panal just down from the air vents...if possible pull the floor mat up if owner allows for this, if not I would wonder why?
Open the vents inside next to your leg on each side and look in, if you remove the vents-2 screws) it's connected to the hood cowel vent and
over the years, lots of leaves and moisture can get in there and rot away. Also, under the cab, there is a cross-member that can collect a lot
of dirt and moisture and can rot away too, along with the floor panels...as well as inside the hood at the front and in the core support
(the area behind the headlights).
I wouldn't worry if the truck is a mix match of parts, like Jowilker says, as long as it's done right....the 1961 grille (if it says Ford across the front)
is actually one of the nicest grilles! I hope to find one some day.
It's pretty rare to find a truck that hasn't been molested in some way...I'm up in Valley Center not far from El Cajon, gimme a shout if you have
any questions via a PM.
I would double check all the vins too. Its entirely possible that it might be a earlier body on a later frame. Which as long as they had it licensed and have a title for it of some kind it should be ok. Depends on the state, some states are real picky about title stuff. The rust issues have been covered pretty well so other than that just a general mechanical inspection. Those 300s are great engines.
