How hard and how much?

My brother is looking to buy a 1998 Ford Ranger. It has an auto trans and its 2x4, but he wants to convert it to 4x4. How much would that cost and how hard is it? Will it be a clean conversion or will I have to jerry rig parts and make it look like crap?

It's a huge job and should not even be attempted unless you have a parts truck at your disposal. It would be much much easier just to find a 4x4 in the first place.
