How much difference would I notice between the explorer LSD and the true tracs?
Are you asking about the actual detroit "true trac" or do you mean a locker of some type? regular driving not a whole bunch. both operate fairly smoothly. With the true trac you likely wont notice at all. the true trac will not clunk, bang or chatter and does not wear out like clutch type units (less maintenance). The true trac should have better straight line control in slippery condition, as it will reduce the trucks tendency to kick out on you, and reduce tire wear a bit as well. The down side to a Detroit true trac is they can not fully lock up 100% and they are limited to 32-33 inch tires (recommended) which is why hard core off-roaders dont usually use them. Oh and cost, A new detroit true trac carrier is $460 (aprox) and a Ford LS Carrier is around $260. Ford LSs are also everywhere and easy to find used as you have already discovered. On another note, ford did use a torsen diff (similar to the true trac) in the Ranger FX4 with 4.10 gears but good luck finding one. As someone already mentioned I think, lockers come in varying degrees, but most will bang or clunk, or ratchet to some extent and cause some tire scrub, but they are designed to have some give. Unlike a spool or lincoln locker.
What's funny is if you read the rear discs thread they say using the explorer rear and for the discs is ok, but it's 28 spline but here your saying its 31 spline. Anyone have an idea which is right?
I would probably grab an explorer rear end if I can get discs and an LSD

Ive always thought all Explorers had the 8.8 with 31 spline, but someone can correct me if not. the rangers on the other hand came with 7.5 or 8.8s in mostly 28 spline but there are a few 31 splines, like on the offroad packages and the cab chassis models.
