So I hopped into the Hunk o' Junk to go home today.
The left front wheel made a godawful screeching noise going forward, but not going backwards.
So I got out and pulled the hubcap off with a crowbar, and then proceeded to beat the hell out of everything in the general vicinity with a rubber mallet (I figured the brake caliper piston was stuck out and the brakes were just glazed and squealing). It sounded like something fell out, but I didn't see what and couldn't find any parts laying on the ground. So maybe a gravel got stuck up in there somewhere or something.
At any rate, the noise stopped after that...
I'm gonna have to get me a bottle jack and a tire iron to haul around in that thing.... It didn't come with any of that stuff (or a spare rim, though there is an old tire laying in the bed...). 'Course, it was too dark to fool with by the time I got home.
Glad your manuals came, they should be a big help.
You won't find any troubleshooting advice in there to "beat the hell out of everything in the general vicinity with a rubber mallet" - but I'm glad that method worked for you!
Front hubs and bearing are not a difficult job to do on a 2X4, 4X4's are a little harder but still not that bad. Pull the wheel, remover the caliper and remove the center hub nut is all there is to it. That way you'll know, and not just think, if you have a problem.
