If I rev the motor to 3000+ and let it drop to 1000-1500 then rev again it pops really loud from around the TB. I know I have the timing set to 10*btdc, but the chain probably has 200k miles on it. Could that be the problem?
If it backfires through the carb it means the timing is too retarded and the intake valve is still open when it fires. I would guess, that yes, the timing chain has too much slack and that is why you get this problem after you rev it like that. I would take the timing cover off and check the chain. Replacing the timing chain can be a PITA but better than a blown engine.
Let us know what you find. I'm not sure what the tolerance is for your engine regarding chain slack, but you should be able to tell if it's too loose by eye.
I've had some of my junkercycles backfire through the carbs when the mix is too lean and I snap the throttle closed too fast. That was with CV carbs though, so no idea if it applies to these trucks or not....
(Indeed, I prolly oughtta keep my mouf shut about stuff I don't really know anything about, eh? :P )
