Help me with a scientific experiment

Hello Friends!

How would you all like to help in a scientific experiment? I need some raw data for my research project. And for raw data I need your help.

I am doing some research using biometric data for identifying users on a computer system. For my research to continue, I need some raw data. That is where you all come in. Can I collect some data from you?

It actually very simple for you to help me. Go to TimothyWoodcock.com, click the “I Agree to Participate” button and follow the prompts. You will need to make up a user id and password (DO NOT USE your FTE logon or password or any other password you normally use – the passwords are not encrypted in this application) then just log in and type something in the textbox. (Kinda like what you do here on FTE.)

I would be eternally grateful if I could get about 50 typed words from several of you.... Yea, I know that sounds like a lot, but I can only use about 70% of the characters you type. A counter will indicate how many characters you typed that I can use in this project. If I only get 10 characters from you, I will use the data as best I can. It will not go to waste. If I can get about 100 characters from you, I will be happy, because I will be able to build the software models I need to show this works. If I get 1000 total characters from you, I will be ecstatic! I would have enough data to prove beyond a doubt that the models work. The good news is you don't have to type them all at once. In fact, going back and adding more text later is better for the raw data I need. Go back and type a few words when you are happy. Add a few words when you are sad or sleepy or anytime at all. Just remember your logon and password and you can go back as often as you like.

I will not record anything you type or anything about you. I will not be able to recreate what you type. What will be recorded is information about how you type.

TimothyWoodcock.com has been tested on several browsers, but may have bugs in it. I have NOT tested it on a smart phone yet. I know it is not pretty, but it works (I’m a programmer, not an artist).

I hope you will agree to help me with this research project. I hope you will go back several times and add more data for me.

Thanks Friends!!!

Timothy

Thanks guys! I knew you all would help me! Now all I need is a few more folks to go and painlessly type a few words for me and I can start building the computer models.

Again, Thanks for participating! You guys are the greatest!

ok Timothy
I have submitted twice so far. Once about 4 or 5 pm using an older version of Microsoft Internet Explorer. I was in a bit of a hurry at the time and managed to click in somewhere around 360 to 390 recorded? recognized? accepted? (I forget the term being used there) characters.
The second entry was late last night as I was fighting sleep. I used Google Chrome and it appeared to work very smoothly for a submission of somewhere around 470 to 490 characters.

Now I have a couple of questions for you:
What is the desired sample population? Is it strictly FTE members? Internet Forum users? Internet Automotive-themed Forum users? or anyone willing to volunteer?

I ask because I know quite a few people outside FTE I could forward your link to that would be interested and have fun participating, but I don't know if that would confound your sample or not.

If so, I was just thinking I also have a friend over in the KS chapter and get to read some in their threads from time to time. They've got a pretty good crew over there and might be game to pitch-in.

JT,

First, thank you for helping me with data! Any data is good, but a lot of data is GREAT!

Second, I am looking for a cross section of America. I'd like data from people of all ages. I'd like data from folks on the east coast, and folks on the west coast, and folks in the mid west. I started with the Texas chapter of FTE because I knew you all would help.

You are more than welcome to post the link on other forums and with other chapters. You may ask friends and family and other forums to participate.

Anyone who does research will tell you that ideas are easy to come up with. And papers are easy to write. Statistics and a piece of cake and if you do the stats wrong every reviewer will tell you that you did the stats wrong.

However, raw data is difficult to acquire. Raw data can be more valuable than gold. Most researchers guard their raw data and resist sharing it.

My friends, you are giving me gold. I'm going to have to bring a lot of beer to the Annual GTG.

So, after this rambling answer (ask me what time it is and I tell you how to build a watch) let me summarize.... Yes, please share this link with anyone who would be willing to help.

Thanks again! You are the best!!!

Timothy
