Distributor gear destroyed!!??

Hey everyone,

My truck died on me a couple of days ago. I had no spark so replaced the coil and ICM, still no spark. So I'm taking out the distributor to change the PIP and this is what I find.

A little background, the engine was rebuilt to some hi perf specs only 3000 miles ago. Everything was converted to rollers. I tried to call the builder and the phone is disconnected.

This is a 1994 F-350, 460

Anyone have any idea what may have happened here?

Sounds like your distributor had a cast gear with a steel roller cam , cast cam cast gear , steel roller cam , you need a steel gear....

any idea why the builder would put a brass gear on the distributor?

Maybe he just put it back the way it was? It looks totally different from the gear on the replacement distributor, which looks cast & grey colored.

Im not sure , i thought the brass gear would work with a cast or steel cam ? , just steel and cast won't work together

No brass is very soft, the only option with a billet roller cam is a steel gear.

Brass gears are sometimes thought as universal, because they are so soft and will not damage the cam. This is ok (sometimes) for a normal engine, but not one with performance specs. They shear right off, just like in your pic. Get the right gear, and flush the oil good. The brass shavings are not magnetic and tend to float around.

A brass gear is sacrificial and usually used only on competition engines. You have to monitor wear. It also releases brass into the engine.
