Hey everyone...new here and have a question. I have a 93 F150 5.8 4X4 with the E4OD tranny. While pulling a heavy load through some rough terraine I got hung up and had to rock the truck forward and reverse trying to break free. As I dropped it backinto drive and admittedly floored it....I heard something snap and now the tranny is dead. No forward gears or reverse..the only thing that works is park. I have dropped the trans thinking I may have snapped the input shaft but it seems fine..so maybe the torque converter or maybe something internal?? ANY ideas. I have pulled wrenches for many years now but mainly on heavy equipment so I'm no expert at all on this...I'll appreciate any input..Thanks!
I take it that when in Park the truck would not roll, so that would indicate that the transfer case is not the problem.
The only thing I can say is that it is not electrical. My guess would be an internal trans issue. Maybe drop the pan and see if there is any debris.
Also possible it is the torque converter but I don`t know you would determin that.
Hopefully more help will follow.
Thanks Lazy K for the input. Yeah I had figured the output end of the tranny was still intact due to the fact that park still worked, meaning the vehicle would not roll and also that when I did put it in gear and revved it up and then shifted directly to park it went smoothly instead of hearing that little latch finger trying to engage. A little earlier this evening I went ahead and dropped the pan..and oh #$^#^%$&. Debris everywhere and then I looked into the pump intake port the filter slides into. I can see a crack in the pump housing itself and just behine that port there is a slot you can look up into. Nothing but mangled metal there and even a chunk of the main transmission housing taken out. I guess the only thing to do now is pop the pump and see what the extent is. So far it looks catostrophic to me. I'll post back and let ya'll know what I found.
Ok..it's toast. I popped out the pump, which itself is busted and took a look. The coast clutch is gone, nothing left but two handfuls of castiron. The main housing is badly scored and banged up. The overdrive planetary is in pieces along with the overdrive clutchpack and piston. Sooooo anyone have a spare E4OD laying around thier backporch???
Something about a Mazda being behind my 351 makes my skin crawl. Besides...The Auto has spoiled me and lets the ole lady ride closer. I work at a salvage yard so I'll just wait for one to pass through and hope it's in good shape or needing nothing but a little tlc with a clutch and seal kit.
Ok..my bad. I've actually rebuilt a few ZFs due to sychronizer failure. The tranny tech I spoke with told me it's only marketed by Ford..built built by Mazda. One of thier first marriages. Once again though...I only pull wrenches on the big stuff..Automotive wise I know enough to get by but have to rely on you guys when I get lost.
I found another E4OD at the scrap yard. Out of a 95 custom van. It was scrapped for eng. related reasons so I going to go for it. Let you know how it turns out.
No..it's a two wheel drive. I'll have to swap out tailshafts but I'm ok with that..it gives me a chance to look at the guts. Hopefully I find it's in pretty good shape.

Not that simple, you can't simply swap tail shafts from 2 wheel to 4 wheel models, gotta completely tear tranny down.
Unless I read it wrong, that is what you intend to do?
