Ok, I know that this has been answered before but I cant seem to find the tread but on my Bronco I have the bw1356 electronic push button transfer behind the AOD behind the Fuelly 302. I am already changing the 302 to carb as I like carbs better and I want to switch the BW to a manual transfer. My question is what transfer case will mate to the AOD or do I need to ditch the set-up in it now and change to a C6 so I can put in the NP208?
You can basically use any transfercase Ford offered, but finding the linkage for that transmission is difficult. The BW1356 is a very strong transfercase; much stronger than the np208. There is a product out there called the "shiftster" that bolts on to an electric t-case where the motor goes, and allows you to shift the case manually. I don't want to start another carb vs efi debate, but don't reccomend switching to a carb.
The BW1356 also came as a manual shift, you would have to aqquire all the brackets and linkage, Then remove the opening in the floorboard and trim the carpet.
On the efi to carb swap...I did it on my 88's 351w, But not really just cause...I basically had to finish/fix the original owner's "attempt" to to the swap...The wiring harness was so hacked up and efi upper end was long gone. it was just easier to fix the mess and finish the swap. Im happy with it. its my first carbed vehicle..but ill probably go back to EFI when im ready to make her a 408...probably the Holley setup.
As far as the carb-efi thing.......everyone has their thing.....I like carbs better. I dont have to worry about smog.....only OBDII has to have all smog tests done. I very much dislike the electronic transfer case. I wasnt sure if the regular BW1356 would mount up without a lot of trouble. I know where I can find a complete with linkaged 1356 so.........I smell a small project coming up
I went to cleghorn to offroad a few weeks ago, and my buddy in a 78 bronco nearly couldn't make it up a particular hill cause his carb kept overflowing into his motor and stalling it out...my efi on the other hand was flawless the entire time...guess if you're not really into wheeling that much, do what floats your boat.
Swapping in a manual 1356 is easy, but two pieces of the linkage are transmission-specific. The AOD/BW1356 is the rarest combination and hardest to find. If your truck is an 88, you need to get a case from an 88-91 model. There is a variety of small differences between the 88-91 and 92-96 cases that makes swapping them between the two generations of trucks a pain.
