My new camper

Well the wife and I just bought another camper it is a 2002 Arctic Fox 990, it is in really nice shape. It is a heavy camper though on the tag it says it weights just over 3500 lbs full of water, propane and two batteries. It does squat the back of the truck some so I am thinking about putting on air bags to help with the load, does anyone have any experance with one brand or the other?

Very nice! AF makes nice campers.

You should go visit the truck camper section of rv.net. There are lots of nice folks over there.

If you are interested we also offer load support products for your truck. Here is a link to the kit we offer if you are interested, the kit # is 57215.

The kit comes with the ability to air up via an external compressor, such as a tire filling station. If you are interested in adjusting on the fly, you may also want to look at an onboard air compressor system. We offer everything from simple manual controls to a fully wireless system. I would suggest a dual controller, this would allow you to adjust each side independently. This is extremely helpful with campers as the weight inside is not necessarily distributed evenly side to side.

If you decide to go with air lift, we suggest you compare prices from our retailers to make sure you get the best price. Also, if you buy before the end of this month and purchase a kit and compressor system you would qualify for a $100 dollar rebate.

If you have any questions about air load support I would be happy to help.

That camper is sweet. Looks like you stole the front end of a 5th wheel

That is a nice unit Tim. Your going to need air bags or something along those lines for sure.

The RV show is in town so I'm going to check out the new offerings.

Nice! I've got an Eagle Cap 9.5ft that also weighs 3500lbs on my '97 F350. I didn't notice any squat and it rides better than my F250 did with Firestone bags. That setup from airlift looks really good, I would go with that.

If you ever get a hitch for that setup to pull a boat or a car trailer behind it all go with a Superhitch.

Like Mike said Tim, I've had the firestone bags for four years now and have beat the crap out of them and they are going stronge, no leaks.

Air Lift Mike, I'm trying out some of your air bags on a 'trailer saver' hitch. So far it has really smoothed out the ride in getting rid of the 'chucking' that a 5th wheel will do.

Sounds very cool. Did you make your own hitch or did you just replace the airbags on a hitch you bought?

Hey I see the cost for the bags and hardware; how about the other items. Compressor, air tank remote etc...

Like the Airlift guy says, individual side controls. That can make a lot of difference. Does that truck have a lift?

I didn't make the hitch, I bought a Trailer Hitches – Air Ride Trailer Hitch & Fifth Wheel Hitch and they use 'air lift' bags. When I say 'chucking' its when you hit rough spots in the road and the 5th wheel will come down hard on the pickup. I've only made one trip with it so far and I think it will work out good. Very expensive but I've been hit so hard I'm surpised it didn't break the axle or fram of the pickup.

Tim, that's the perfect rig to take to Alaska!

Thanks guys for the input. I am looking at the AirLift setup with the $100.00 rebate looks like a good way to go. I'm a little concerned about the clearance between my summer tires and the frame rail. I run a bigger tire in the summer, BFGoodrich 315/75-16 and I am not sure of the off set. I think before I order the air bags I think I will bolt on a summer tire and measure the clearance. AirLift recommends 8" and Firestone recommends 7.5" my guess is I will be fine.

The guy I bought it from included the Super Hitch extension so all I need to modify my receiver to take advantage of it.

Glen, Alaska is in the plans but maybe a couple of years down the road. I think our first long distance road trip will be across the country at least as far as Iowa and Kansas to visit relatives.
