Team, I am wanting to pull both of my tanks and clean them. Why both, my rear tank has not been used in a long time, fuel in it really stinks, and the front tank was cut open and modified for my boom lift. When doing this removal, do I need any new parts, gaskets, fuel socks, etc. I want to clean them out. Thanks
Having new lock rings and gaskets on hand would be a great idea. You also might want to pick up a couple tools for disconnecting the flexible quick detach fuel lines. They're not too expensive.
Do yourself a favor, if it is not too much trouble, just pull the bed and do it without dropping the tanks. One electrical connector at the back of the bed, 6 bed bolts and a buddy to help you lift it off the frame is all you need. It's generally a lot quicker and easier than dropping both tanks to work on them.
Have you thought about pulling the bed and cleaning them from top side? Also, you have any pics of your truck? (I wanna see modified tank to support a boom)
Be a little more specific on the parts, ford parts or aftermarket, pulling the bed is not a option on a 12foot bump truck, I was just going to raise the bed, but I wanted to remove the takns. Thanks
Yeh, I found I had a leak in the main tank when I had to get it towed when the CPS left me on the back road. The main tank has a section cut out of it and inverted and welded back in to make room when the lift boom is down, the tank is leaking from that area, this is a used truck, prior owner said it was several years since the rear tank was used, I want to remove it and clean it out too.

Glenn (Oldbird65) should be receiving a couple of these lock ring kits this afternoon and seems to think they will do the trick. I don't know if he hgot them from Rock Auto, or Jegs or where, but if you search for a Dorman #579-004 you will see all kinds of places you can get them.
The only way to open the tank is through the sending unit and to do that, you remove the lock ring (usually damaging it in the process). These kits are supposed to have a new lock ring and a new gasket for the sending unit.
If you're not able to remove the bed and the straps look crusty, you might want to plan to have new tank straps on hand as well.
I just did both tanks. The Dorman 579-004 come with the lock rings from auto zone. I had a lot of trouble with the O ring staying in the groove while putting the sending unit back on. The O ring is smaller in diamater then the groove. I suppose they made it like that because they will swell up. By all means get the fuel line tool, I just got the cheap one from auto zone. They worked OK but just are plastic. If your going to do fuel lines very much get the metal ones.

I don't know....I got the metal sets (if you call it that, it's pot metal) from Auto Zone and they are the ones that don't fit the supply lines. The 5/16" tool is too small and the 3/8" is too big. I'd say if the plastic ones worked, to stick with the plastic ones. I about lost my religion trying to unhook the lines between the frame and the engine.
Were they to big in thickness, the part you insert being to thick? When I looked at them, that's what I thought. The plactic ones included the ac lines also.
