E4OD sometimes stuck in drive

I've done a lot of reading through these forums and I have found many similar E4OD issues but nothing quite the same. This is on a 1992 f-150 4.9L.

Sometimes the transmission gets stuck in drive. By that I mean, I can move the gear selector from D into R and N but it still tries to go forward. Other times it will shift into reverse and neutral fine. I havent found any magic recipe for making it work consistently. The selector is definitely finicky.

The torque converter and pump were replaced about 3 months ago.

Its currently at the shop (having some brake work done in addition to the trans) so I cant do any tests on it currently. The shop checked out the linkage and says its moving fine. They also do not think it is the MLPS (though I'm not sure how they determined this). Fluid level is ok. Basically I think the shop is not a transmission shop and they have determined that it is a transmission issue and have thus given up. Next step would be to have it transported to their partner transmission shop to have the transmission looked at.

I'm trying to figure out if I should have it sent to the trans shop or just get it back and try to do some diagnostics myself before sending it in.

The trans shop has given a quick guess that it is probably a clutch issue. Does this seem reasonable given that it will sometimes go into reverse? Could this be a shift solenoid issue?

I appreciate the help.

any ideas? I'd like to get an idea of what to expect from the transmission shop before I blindly agree to an overhaul.

they must of tested it? better test it yourself.you never know who trust these days know what im saying.
your out nothing if it tests fine but a few mins of your time.so might as well start with the obvious.
besides, they should "know" if it's a failed MLPS or not,not "think" it isn't lol.

When you/they ran the self test and checked for codes, what if anything did the computer have to say about the issue?

The self test has been run right?

The fact it does do it right now and then to me suggests an electrical issue of some kind, more then any mechanical type failure of the trans.

I dont know about the codes, I have not looked at them. I hope the shop has but I have not explicitly asked.
