I'm considering purchasing a 1975 F250 with a 4sp, 302 & 4.10 rear gears. The truck has alum. radiator & electric fans. Would this combo be good to pull a 4000lb single axle camper with trailer brakes? I plan to make some interstate trips but stay below 65 m.p.h.
In the end, you are going to be able to tow with this set-up. the F350 should have decent suspension to handle the tongue weight. I know people that tow with 6-cyl trucks, vans, etc... and do OK.
You shouldn't break anything with this rig, you'll just end up being a bit doggy on the hills, and if you are backing/parking in uneven terrain or over curbs you might need to "run" at some of the obstacles to get over them. But you'll get there, and that's what counts, right?
If your trailer has brakes on it I would definitely wire for trailer brakes in your rig. This will save a ton of engine wear going down hills, and just make you safer overall.
The camper has trailer brakes and I will wire the truck for them. I really like the trailer brakes when towing with our Expedition. The camper's tongue weight is only 450 lbs so the F250 springs shouldn't even know it's there. I just didn't want a huge engine as most of the time the truck will be used hauling mulch and light packages to big for the Expedition.
I've hauled and towed campers/trailers since I was a teen in the 70's. 3K isn't very heavy at all and with the trailer brakes, your F250 will do just fine. I don't know the elevation you live at but unless you live in the Rocky mountain area, like I do, you'll be fine. The hitch weight is nothing and you probably won't even notice a drop. I'm surprised that you have the 4.10 in that set up but that will help. If you were talking 6K and in hilly areas, then I'd say you might be dissappointed with the set-up.
My 77 302/c4 pulls my 66 10ft Shasta at maybe 1800 pounds fine at 65 until the slightest upgrade. Speed bleads off quickly and mileage is terrible. Headers helped a great deal. Waiting to install a four barrel when I can get one. Did have a slight problem with the old headlight switch as do to age it would overheat with trailer lights hooked up. Check grounds for lights also.
