intermittent check engine light

Purchased certified pre owned 2009 f150 may/2010 24,000 mile. The check engine light intermittently comes and goes. It seems that its either cold temperature or related to filling the gas tank. The first time it appeared I drove 100 mile then the truck sat over the weekend and went back off when started. The second time had serviced for the check light and the dealer diagnostic pin pointed P0304,P0305,P0300 and P0316 and replaced cyl 4&5 coils.Prior to the replacement of the coils the truck averaged 18.2 mpg since the repair the mpg dropped to 17.6 and now at 17.2mpg. Had the truck in again and the light was on when I made the appointment but went back off when I went to the dealer. They said the reset the computer. The light twice has since went on and then back off after a couple days. The only observation is that the outside temperature on both occurrences has been below freezing and that I had filled up the tank.

Well - those are all misfire codes (cylinders 4 and 5) and engine misfire detected on startup (First 1000 Revolutions) (P0316).

There is a specific troubleshooting technique for misfires and simply throwing parts at the problem will not fix it. It could be the coils (but probably not since they already replaced them), could be the plugs (did they even look at them?), or it could be a wiring issue. Have they swapped the 'bad coils' with other good coils? Did the misfire follow the bad coils?

I hope you purchased this at a Ford dealer and hope you know the warranty is 36 years or 36,000 miles.

Don't let them simply 'reset' the computer. All they're trying to do is get you out the door. Keep at them and if necessary 1) take it to another dealer or 2) get your money back.

intermittent check engine

Thanks for the reply. Made an appointment last evening for tomorrow and the light was back off this morning. I've called the dealer and will be dropping off tonight. I had purchased the extended warranty due to this problem prior to the expiration of the 36,000 mile warranty.

Reps sent for checking back in (and replying with an actual 'thank you'). It's really nice to have a new member that isn't rude!

Please keep us posted on the results.

Welcome to FTE. Like Charlie said, there were codes in there before they reset the PCM. They'll be back. You might have to drive it awhile for them to show up, but they will return. Keep after the dealer or go to a different dealer until it's fixed.

Hey Charlie/Greg, just back from the dealer with a P2096 and replacement of Bank 1 02 sensor. Said it might take running half tank of gas to get mileage back. We'll see. Thx again

Fantastic. Now that they got the problem fixed enjoy the truck. I really do like my 06 5.4L F150. I would love to have an EcoBoost with that 6 speed transmission, but I can buy a lot of gas for the amount of $ that they cost. I only have 49K miles on the 06. Other than it's an EC instead of CC it's equipped like I want. Just can't justify the cost of a new truck right now when the 06 is still doing what I want.

Great news! Greg is right, enjoy the truck.

Greg, I had my 97 SC for 12 years and just over 197k. My wife finally made me get a crew cab (the boys grew up).

Boy, oh boy, Charlie, if I keep my 06 until I get 197K miles on it I'll never get a crew cab at the rate I drive. Or by the time I do I'll be so old and blind I'll need a guide dog to help me see to drive. That is if I can get my old decrepit **** in the cab. That's a climb for a fit person with a 4x4. I can only imagine what it would be like when I'm that old with drool running down my chin not knowing who or where I am. Oh who am I trying to kid? That's what I was like when I was in the Army on a weekend pass. Even though it was 40 years ago, I remember it like it was yesterday. Of course I still can't remember all of the fuzzy part. That would be the part of the weekend that you were supposed to return to the base towards the end of that bender. Oh how it would be to be able to be young and stupid again, heh?
