auxiliary gas tank question

Has anyone seen this type of gas tank before? Was it dealer installed? The filler neck is in the wheel well of my 1976 Highboy. I just bought the truck. I plan on changing the fuel filters and rubber hoses. I should drop the tank and clean it out and the in cab tank before getting the truck ready for the road, right? Any one know where i can get a replacement tank like this, I cannot find any in cab replacement tanks, and that one would most likely need to be restored. I would like to keep the truck stock appearing as much as possible.

Thank you in advance.

Anthony

I have never seen a tank like that on an F series and I have been around alot of them. Not to say it isnt because I'm sure theres alot I havent seen but if I had to bet $ I'd bet that is a custom fabrication. My '76 F-100 came from the factory with 2 tanks, one in-cab and the aux between the frame and behind the rear axle. IMHO I dont like where that tank is mounted outside the frame, a fenderbender there looks like it would rupture or even road debri or a rock could do same, as low as the tank sits. How do you switch tanks on that? A switch on climate controls or a manual valve under the drivers seat? There are sources for aftermarket tanks, do a search of the forum and you should get plenty of feedback.

I have the switch on the dash it says main/auxiliary. I saw something similar on another 76 highboy on ebay..but I do not know if this was a dealer installed item or not, but I think it can be aftermarket. I did see those threads and since this truck isn't going to be restored for a while, i was just wondering if I should drop the tanks and clean them out to get the truck drivable ascertain what is actually needs in repairs. Thank you for your input.

I had two similar tanks on my '73 F100, one on each side. They were attached to the bed by two long through bolts. Mine had the fillers on top of the tanks and filler doors that were screwed to the sheetmetal.
They were on the truck when I bought it in '85. There was a manual valve next to the drivers seat to switch them.
I removed them for the very reason bamaf150 brought up, location. There is absolutely no crash protection if you're ever broadsided.
Just so you know, there was a thread here not too long ago about the in cab tanks and there was still a supplier listed. I'll see if I can find that thread.

I had a 76 f250 4wd w/ 3 tanks, 1 in cab, a left and a right aux tank behind the cab, under the bed, in front of the tire, between the bed and the frame, filled through the wheel well opening, manual valve selector on d/s floor next to seat, near door rocker..sure came in handy when I was towing my 71 blazer from Al. back to NJ

I may be selling these, as well as the in-cab tank that I removed from my crew cab..in good shape and been stored inside..pm me if you are interested

notched for fwd. spring hangar

from 77 crew cab

Thank you Lostinfords....Are those tanks plastic? They look plastic in the pictures...how would a system like that cost and how do you run it? I think I will toss that extra tank.....Looking at it again it is in a dangerous spot.....

if you can't find a supplier for a new in-cab tank, I have the one from my 77 crew cab available....the aux tanks are plastic
the outboard the frame rail location for a fuel tank has been a long ongoing debate, those say it has no protection?,...this is true but it is also away from heat and electric sources, so it comes down to what you feel comfortable w/...another option is to go w/ an aftermarket or custom tank and mount it behind the rear axle/between the frame rails....
