Heater Parts Question

First off a big thanks to Bismic for the help in troubleshooting! My question is what is the name of the vacuum actuator/solenoid device located behind the glovebox that controls the defrost/floor positions? My defroster is stuck on. my thermostat works and the AC works so my vacuum is good, checked all hoses and they are good. So im wanting to replace that actuator. Anyone know its official name?

Thanks

Wade

Why are you thinking the vacuum must be good because the thermostat and A/C works? Neither of these are vacuum related. Have you actually checked the vacuum pump and lines to make sure there is vacuum there?

Vacuum controls the heater valve thats in the heater hose that runs into the heater core and that valve works. I checked all the lines and they were good. Im replacing the pump since its cheap and easy to get to and im going to replace the actuator thing once i can find out what its really called

The heater control valve is held normally open by a spring. Vacuum is applied to the valve to close it when the control **** is in the MAX A/C and OFF positions only. So unless you've actually seen it move, it's not an indicator that there is vacuum.

You need to take the nipple off of the pump and see if it runs and sucks air, then plug it back in and see if it pulls down a vacuum and holds it. The pump should run for a few minutes and then shut off.

There are three air direction doors. They are each controlled by a vacuum motor. Diagrams and descriptions are below, but I don't have part numbers.

Wow thanks! Thats exactly what i needed. I know for sure all the hoses were good. So my plan is to replace the pump since its cheap, double check lines and continue trouble shooting if needed....and thanks again for your help!

Great overview post David. Personally, I would get a vacuum gauge to verify the pump operation (as I mentioned in the OP's first thread on the issue) - they are cheap at autozone, etc.

DevilDocTater - BTW - the pdf's I already sent you (attached below) show the three doors and motors (air inlet door, panel defrost door, and panel/floor door) - location, removal instructions, etc. Should be all you need. Call TousleyFordParts, tell them the name of the door/motor you need (if that is in fact what you need) and they can get it to you. Or, your local dealership can get it for you also - no part number actually needed. If/when you do get a part number though, please post it up. I have a pretty good reference library on part numbers, but do not have those doors/motors.
