Frame Problem

Guys, I had my wife rock the steering wheel back and forth to see where any play is in my tie rod ends, drag link etc. and noticed that my steering box was twisting every time she moved the wheel. upon further inspection I can see where they did some really crappy looking welds on the frame pieces that the box bolts to. I don't see any cracks but I wonder if those rivets loosen up? This weekend Im going to remove the steering box and clean everything off.

Generally not a good idea to drill through or weld a frame.

This has been a problem, mostly on 4x4 trucks with large tires. Chevy and dodges can have this problem also. The rivets can loosen, the welds can crack, and the frame material can actually develop cracks. Also the bolts that hold the box to the frame and break.

If you find some of the rivets are loose, some people remove them, and drill the hole to the next size bolt so the bolt fits tight in the new hole.

It isn't just smaller (pickup) trucks. Many years ago I worked for the GMC large truck dealer in Norfolk VA. They also sold Diamond T before they became Diamond REO. We had a recall for frames cracking around the steering box on those. Years later at Tysinger Dodge in Hampton VA, the Dodge vans were cracking the frame at the steering box mounts, we had one come in with the whole steering gear flopping around.

Here is what I installed to prevent the gear box frame mount from cracking on my 86 Pontiac Trans Am. I would buy one for my truck if I could find one.
