I recently rebuilt my 73 c-4 transmission and now it's hard to get it to grab reverse and I have no third gear.Any ideas of what I might have done wrong? Do you think it could be an adjustment or something internal.I hate the thought of pulling it out again.
I'm no expert, but I did rebuild my C-4. Sounds like you don't have the bands adjusted correctly. I was really careful the first time and got it really wrong somehow.
It is kind of painful, but now as bad as dropping the trans again...pull the oil pan, pull the valve body, and you can reach up and squeeze the bands. See if they are sloppy loose or if one is different than the other.
Like I said, I did the 10 Ft -lbs, back it off thing as the manual says and somehow got it way wrong. Had to do what I describe above before I felt confident that I got it right.
Are you sure you have enough fluid in it? Just checking. When I rebuilt mine a few weeks ago I put nearly 10.5 quarts in it. That's counting the 1.5 I put in the torque converter before I put it on.
Ok, cool. How much have you driven it and ran through the gears? Mine took a few test drives to get all the juices flowing. LOL The best part of the test drives was that I was doing it with open headers!!!!
I drove mine more than that before it started shifting right. I think you need to drive it some more like if you have long straight-a-way that you can get it up to 3rd on then slow down and stop to let it down shift, repeat a few times.
Or wait to drive it til someone with more knowledge comes along. I may just have gotten lucky and not torn mine up.
Before I took off down the street in it. I did run it through the gears backing up and driving forward up and down the driveway a few times.
Ok, drove it for awhile working the shifter through all gears and now reverse is gone again and still no third.I love my truck but it's trying my patience
Everything seemed to work with the air check but I could be wrong. This was my first rebuild so I don't really know how things should look or sound when checking.I'll take the valve body back off and do another air check and look at the bands to see if anything looks out of place. If not, then I guess it's time to take it back out and start over!
