I've got a 435 in my rig, I swapped it in the replace the c6. Personally, I wouldn't trade the granny gear for an overdrive, but I live in a city that's got hills with 30% grades! Granny comes in handy to get it moving. For me starting in 2nd is fine on level ground, but on those big hills granny is a clutch saver. Just for the record my rig has 4.10s and 30 inch tires.

And the guys are right, you can't kill these things. I was coasting around a parking lot at about 5mph, in nuetral, wasn't thinking and stuffed it into granny to pull into a parking spot, without even hitting the clutch. It went into gear, and stalled the motor! My drive-shaft and back axle let out the loudest ping you ever heard, but everything was ok, and granny still works great!

4WD Modified truck pullers use the NP435/T18/T19 stock with 50,000+ pound sleds. Boo ya!

Not much to add. Everyone's pretty well got it covered. I like this calculator though. It allows you to compare side by side a different trans/tire size/gear ratio instead of having to plug everything in multiple times and going back and forth to compare.

I recently swapped from a C6 to NP435.......then to a 4:1 low gear T19 when I found one.

Personally, I found the 435 a headache with it's gear ratios/spacing - mainly the big jump between 3rd & 4th, even with a 351W.
I was often in a situation of either screaming in 3rd, or lugging in 4th (particularly in hills)

But the close ratio T19, with it's four well-spaced gears, revolutionized the truck.
I don't know why these weren't the 'standard' transmission, & the granny-low an option.

I've only driven two NP435's, but the Borg Warners I've driven, also shifted smoother.
The T19 synchromesh 1st is nice, too - & would be more so with city driving.

The auto to manual swap itself, took me 25.5 hours including the drive shaft modifications.

Lets go back to the statement "I currently have a C6, but have always preferred a manual shift. Being quite wet behind the ears, especially in this area".

I would suggest if possible borrowing a older manual clutched heavy truck (non hydraulic assist newer type) vehicle and drive it around town in traffic for like a week and around 5pm stop light to stop light and in weekend traffic to get some leg time on it.

Big difference in a 5 sp Ford Fiesta and a 79 F250 4 sp clutch, not cracking just stateing.

That might make you like the auto trans a whole lot more and save you all this home work and actual work later.

But if you have to have it, I have read on here that a newer 5 sp with hyd assist swap is the route to go for a better gear range?

There is a kid in cali (user name ??) that did it to a ol HB, and is looks pretty good and he sounds quite happy with it. But your idea of getting a 4wd with a standard shift later sounds like a way easy route to go.

Best of luck on what ever you decide.

11 years ago I drove a 73 F100, 300, and 3 on the tree. I drove that truck for 6 years, as much in traffic as out, and loved that truck. Would still have it if some knucklehead hadn't stolen it. Yes, it's been a while, and we aren't talking the same transmission as what I used to know, but I feel pretty confident that this is something I want to pursue.

That being said, I also will be looking for a 2nd truck, probably 4wd, and may just leave this one as is, and fix up the 2nd truck first. If I am so inclined after that, then I can convert the first.

Me to, but it was a whole lot longer ago a had 240 till I popped it and swapped in a 300. Sounds like you have plenty of clutch time, I was just throwing the idea out there to consider.

It was the 2wd maroon/white one and yes I was mud boggin it.....

I wonder, what would your final drive be if you put another 435 behind the first one? That would give you double granny, might have to measure movement with a time lapse camera!

it would be like the space shuttle mover, but seriously i love my np435 its a great trany and id recomend it to anyone. id say the ONLY drawback i feel that it has (for people that cant double clutch) is the un-synced 1sd gear. but 9 out of 10 times you dont need to shift into 1st when your rolling
