I have seen both 78s and 79s with the black tape surround for the headlight buckets.
I think that might be a 78 only thing. Regardless, I would remove it.
One last thing.
Why do some beds have dual gas tanks with doors, and some only have a single gas opening with no door (i.e., the cap is exposed)?
The last truck I looked at has the single exposed cap (it is a 4X4).

The black bezels could be used on practically any trim line.
It was standard on the free-wheeling package.
The 3 available bezels were Silver, Chrome,& black

All 77-78-79's have fuel doors.
The 73-76 have a flush mount cap
The 72 I know has a stick out cap
Here is a photo of a 78 F-150 4x4.
Look closely and you will see 2 fuel doors.

It was either a 77 or had a 77 box on it.
