I'd check that wiring. If one of the shifter solenoids is energized the fluid could be bypassing. I'm not much of an auto trans guy, but I'd get a check list going and start going down it to find the issue.
This set up came out of that parts truck you bought? I'm assuming you ran it through it's paces?

If it isn't the filter or shift cable it could be a broken snap ring that holds the reverse drum in place...

Well I pulled the pan and the filter was still in place, no sign of a broken snap ring, but a decent amount of metal shavings in the pan. Everyone that's seen the pic says that it isn't out of the norm to have that amount of shavings, but still seems like too much for a trans that's only supposed to have 20k on it.
Anyone have anything good/bad to say about AAMCO transmission shops? The guy I talked to here in Corvallis seems to be knowledgable and they can build me a decent trans with a triple disc billet converter and shift kit for $3,000.

Thanks Dave. The guy I talked to on the phone today seemed to know what he was talking about, and they give a $100 military discount. My wife is still gonna chit a chicken when she hear's how much it's gonna cost, but it's gotta be done...
And still 2 grand cheaper than BTS... just won't have the liftime warranty that BTS has.

On another note.........
My Dad has refused further treatment and wishes to let things run their course, Docs are giving him another week.
He has sprung so many leaks in his GI tract, no doc can keep up with it, and his weakened heart valves can't either.
I have little more to add.
