I just went to 3 different body shops and got some pricing on painting. I have a 2005 XL with the textured black plastic upper bumper piece and grill. I was getting quote to smooth both of these pieces and paint them to match the truck, the black plastic just looks cheap in my opinion. Between the three shops I was quoted $500 to $800. To me this seems insane!!! The said the materials alone were going to cost $300+ because of the paint code that I have is a special paint, its Ford color CX the metallic gray or whatever it is technically called.
Am I getting ripped of or are these prices just crazy?? My wife has a 2011 Kia Soul that was back up into, it needed a new rear bumper plus paint. The total on that bill was only $900, that is understandable because new factory parts were bought. $500 to $800 seems about right if I said buy me a new factory upper bumper piece and grill and paint it for me.
Paint has gotten very expensive. One thing to consider, is metallics are very difficult to match, especially between metal and plastic since the metallic pieces will lay down differently due to static charge. I'd skip it and just get a billet or XLT grille since you won't like how the paint matches.
Personally I am not a big fan of the massive chrome grills, I have been searching all over the web for a decent looking all black grill and have had no luck in the 05-07 style. Other than the XL style grills that are new and not yet sun faded to gray.
Actually this is the image that got me interested in paint my grill, I really think this would look good on my truck.
Don't hate me for disagreeing, but IF you can read instructions (and follow them) and if you are even semi-handy at DIY stuff, you can do it yourself. I have found basecoat/clearcoat paints are extremely easy to match, again provided you are dealing with factory paint and assuming you can follow instructions to a "T". The products can be sold in small quantity cans (pints) and the guy at the paint store is usually helpful enough. You can rent a compressor, buy a cheap gun (my Devilbiss FL3 was about $100) and give it a try for well under what it might cost. Do research online, buy a video and a book and try it yourself. It's just one panel and a grille for crissake. If you had to you could paint it outside on a warm, bug-free morning. You can rub out any boo-boos in the clear. My brother's racecar trailer was painted bc/cc outside and it looks great! I don't know how much $800 is in your bank account, but I'll bet after you price the material and any tools at your paint store, you might think about trying it yourself.
Sand_Man I have actually though about that, but I have TERRIBLE luck even using even a spray can, I understand the technique but I just can not keep the air clean. If I spray something I always get dust in it, or a bug lands on it and gets stuck, then I sand it down and start over and after about the 3rd time of doing this I give up and buy a replacement piece and start over..
I agree with the sand man here. They are front pieces and very easily damaged by road debris anyway, but suit yourself. Seems like an easy project, but if it turns out bad, it is the front of the truck and it will bug you every time you see it. My thinking is, if a man did it it can be done and I can do it too if I have enough will. (within reason ofcourse).
they are about in line with costs.
a quart of single stage paint with clear coat is rite around $300
a quart of 2 stage with clear is around $500
paint prices have gotten out of hand.

I've never in my life paid those kind of prices. I recently bought enough product to paint a whole front wrap (primer, base, clear, activator, sandpaper, tape and masking paper) and the cost was about $270 for DuPont Chroma series. That was counter prices, if I had bought at my favorite online store AutoBodyDepot - Buy Warehouse Direct at Wholesale Pricing I'm sure it would have been less. I painted my whole Mustang for under $2,000.

You would be surprised at what overhead a body shop has, and just because you don't like the price quoted or think it is a high price does not mean you are being ripped off, it just means they charge more than you are willing to pay.
Most people have no idea what it takes to run a business or the overhead that goes along with it, you don't work for free or cheap, why should a body shop be expected to?
You could always get a HVLP and try doing it yourself.

When you do work for yourself you don't have the overhead a shop does and you aren't paying labor or trying to make a profit, so you can't compare DIY to a shop doing it.
Did you do it in a spray booth that complied with EPA regulations?
Do you carry liability and workers compensation insurance?
Do you have a payroll and pay taxes?
BTW the least expensive part of a paint job is the paint, the labor and overghead is where the money is, then a company has to make a profit.
Yes there is a difference between being ripped off and charging a standard price... A couple hundred in paint alone just to paint two small parts seemed CRAZY to me as did the your truck has a "special" type of paint, I dont know anything about paint, that is why I asked. And from what it sounds, paint prices HAVE gone though the roof, which is why the prices sound unreasonable to me.

Hmmm...somehow we went from saving a few bucks by doing it yourself to the cost of opening and operating a fully equipped shop and profitable business, complete with employees and their benefits and taxes. BTW, I don't have a contractor's union card, either, but I somehow managed to lay my own hardwood flooring...
