I have a bad engine on this 1998 Ford F150 with 4.2 V6. There are 77,000 miles on this very clean truck. Should I rebuild the existing engine or is there a better engine to replace the original one with? Looking for advice.
This is just a discussion but 77k is a very short life for theses engines today
What happened?
I have 165k on my 02 4.6 v8.
There is no 'better' engine to replace with or change over to without expense way beyond replacement of the original as well as the hassle of working out incompatabilities and issues...
Depending on what happened, you should look at a rebuilt short block and have the heads serviced or a complete long block.
It's still an old push rod design unlike the 4.6 and 5.4 V8s.
Good luck.
That depends on the problem. If it is a rod knock, then don't touch the top end. Just roll it upside down and put a crank & bearings in it.
If it discolored or scored the rod, then you will have to do a tear down and my opinion is it is too much work. Again your preference.
A rebuilt by you engine provides a lot of satisfaction when it is all done. A junkyard or reman you just never know the quality of the engine. A reman for example could have been built monday when the worker came in half drunk. It could last 10k. Its all hit or miss.
