I wanted to know if anyone was running a crane h 288-2 cam? I can get a good deal on a new one for my 351m. was going to install it with my new intake, carb, and headers along with a strait up timing set. Just wanted to know if it would be to much. It's a 79 150 c6 used for some towing and hauling.
I am no expert on Cam selection, but I have a comp 262 Xtreme 4x4 in a 460 in a f250 4x4 c6 I think it is OK, but if that is a 288 duration cam, that would be pretty aggressive. I would think to tow, the carb might be open pretty far and need some big jets and limit the timing to reduce detonation. I know mine really pings when towing if you can't get that c6 up where everything spins fast enough. I run a 2000 stall converter and it is barely enough at our elevation for my cam. Mine needs about 400 more RPM to get the power useable. At sea level, it would help. I'm sure someone would help more than me, but I feel that this cam is more of a street/strip app. It is easy to over cam and over carb a 6000# truck. The engine can't rev like they do in a car, we run taller tires, heavier vehicles, and often times a heavy foot, it is hard to make an engine be happy in a truck.
