I'm looking for some good software to do a room layout. Nothing that I've tried seems to be any better -- or even as good as-- the ancient MacDraw( which really wouldn't have fit the bill either) .
I'd like a program that had some of the following concepts:
1. Usually you want a line to be straight -- if my shaky hands twitch the mouse slightly, it doesn't mean that I want a little zig in the line.
2. Some easy to do dimensions. Some have rulers, but you still have to watch the ruler as you draw the line. I'd really like one that I could dimension after I put in an approximate line. ( or, oh wow, a rectangle!).
What I mean is that I'd like to draw an approximation of the room, and then enter the actual dimensions to get it to scale. Same thing for the items in the room.
3. Something made for this relatively easy task without a lot of extra crap. I've never known much about layers, and I probably never will. At one time, I think that I could use them, but they just as often got in my way.
I doubt if I'll find such a thing -- at least not at any reasonable price. So, I'll continue with my little paper objects and try not to sneeze while I move them around.
But, if anybody knows of anything, I'd be greateful.
I would be happy to draw your room for you in autocad and post it back as a pdf file. Not sure what you are trying to do, but I've piddled around with sketchup and it seems to have alot of cool features and you can use it for free. Smartdraw is another program that I've seen others use, It has furniture templates and architectural symbols that can be added to your room.
Microsoft Visio is really good for stuff like that; it's easy to make shapes and figures against a grid, and it has several tools for positioning and size measurement. I think it can be purchased as a stand-alone program, or added in to Microsoft Office. I'd keep that in mind if you can't find something that will fit your needs for free.

There is a freeware alternative to Visio called Dia that works fairly well however, I don't think you can dimension anything to scale with it - at least, if there is, I haven't figured it out yet lol...
