Where exactly did you find a 5 Star SCT tuner for $322.15? Are you sure it's a 5 Star unit? SCT X3's are available from a lot of places for that kind of money but one from 5 Star comes loaded with 3 custom tunes from Mike at 5 Star vs 3 canned tunes from SCT, there is a difference.
Mike had his SCT X3's on sale for $389 up untill Dec 24th but now the website shows them for $415 for our V-10's.
Do some reading here for more info. a X3 Power Flash Device Ford 6.8L V10 F-E-Series/ Excursion - 5 Star Tuning
but that's alot of money for a SF3 (P/N: 3015) tuner. Especially if you are going to use Custom Tunes.
Get the Cheaper X3 (P/N: 3000). They both do the same exact thing, only the X3 doesn't hold canned tunes.
even better, find a nice UNLOCKED X2. It will also work on any 99-current Ford. I'm using one on my 06 F-250 right now.
If you buy a used tuner, look for 2 things. In the status it will say X of 5 unlocks left. You need at least 1 unlock left to use it. The fewer unlocks left, the less money it's worth. Also, make sure the device says UNMARRIED or UNLOCKED. Plug it into your OBD-II port and pull up the info. There are some great deals out there. I've bought 5 SCT tuners over the past 2 yrs. Never paid more than $225 for any of them...including 2 SF3 tuners.
after you have a tuner, call up Mike with your PCM info and the tuner serial #.
$50-75 for a custom tune is much better IMO than paying over $400 for the combo brand new. My truck cost me $245 to tune because I bought a used SCT X2 and the tune was only $75
just food for thought. My fun money is tight. So I'm always looking to skin the cat a little more when able
How do they come up with the "custom" tunes? Does the unit monitor you in real time then you send it in and he tweaks it?
most tuners do support this. You data log using their tunes, upload it to them and they'll tweak it and send back a better product

to be honest, most "custom" tunes you purchase are generic tunes. These guys have tuned so many of these vehicles that they know what parameters to tweak based on your vehicle, your location, and your gas octane preference.
The SCT SF3 (P/N: 3015) holds up to 6 tunes. 3 Custom, 3 Canned (from SCT).
The SCT X3 (P/N: 3000) can only hold 3 tunes. It's also typically cheaper
thank you someone got the point... did he sodder different chip in yours alk.... not trying to point but i feel a rep is coming!
I have no doubt the tune is software, not a replacement chip, but I'm wondering do they look at "live" driving data, or do you tell him you have a K&N and a tweaked exhaust and he comes up with a tune that takes that into account?
Looking at the specific engine data would IMO give you a real "custom" tune, vs. just changing some specs based on "bolt on" changes you've made.
Not saying the tunes he gives are bad - people wouldn't spread the praise if he sold crap, just wondering how he comes up with his "custom" tunes.

told him my driving style, mods, tire size, gears and he came up with what i wanted which was the most aggressive tune possible. these are NOT canned tunes they are made for each person based on there needs and wants and truck. no chip its a programmer that hooks to the OBD2 port for programming.
now he has done enough live dyno tuning on these trucks to know what a/f ratio to go with..ect so IMO for a mostly stock truck there's no reason to live tune it when hes got it down to a science. now if its highly moded super or turbo charged then of course.
