HPOP and engine year

Ok, noob time here. Trying to find out where the burning oil smell is coming from in my 04 ex and the 6.0, note - I don't have any service manuals or even the haynes yet and for whatever reason, google is not my friend today. Keep finding links about replacement parts but not where it is.

I read enough before buying to suspect the hpop and I can find pictures of its replacement but not where it should be. Where is this thing?

2nd - read some things about 04 excursions still getting the 03 engines, there is a sticker on the passenger side cover that says 2004, does that really mean its a 2004?

thanks

What is the build date of your X. It should be on your door jam. With that info we can better determine if you have an 03 or 04. FYI, anything built after 9-28-03 was built with the newer 04 engine so that should be your guideline.

In addition, I am pretty sure that on the driver's side on the Valve cover there is a decal that shows the build date.

You could also check the number of blades on your turbo, the 03 has 3 more blades on the exhaust wheel than the 04 (13 vs 10) and I believe the water pump is larger on the 04.

the 6.0 diesel forum has better tech for engine specific stuff. Where is the burning oil smell coming from? tailpipe or engine bay?

Check your turbo up pipe. It is corrugated flex and rubs through after time. It could also be the hot side intercooler tube which sometimes accumulates oil.
