I have a 99 ranger and the brake lights just quit working. It is a 4 cylinder 5 speed no cruise if that matters. I checked all the fuses and am thinking the switch on the pedal is the culprit. it has more wires than i had expected. Anyone know how i should test the switch or have ran into no brakelight issues before? Thanks for your time
If the rear lights are working with the flashers, sounds like the problem is with the B+ feed on the brake master cylinder end of things, so begin with a B+ 12volt test at the master cyl switch electrical connection feed point, as this connection it hot all the time, even with the ignition switch off!!!!!
If you have B+ to the MC brake switch, have someone step on the brake pedal, or block it with a wedge so its closing the brake switch contacts & check for B+ on the other side of the MC brake switch. If you don't have B+ through the MC brake switch & its one that has the Rust/Red color insulator, replace it with one with the Black color insulator.
ok i will check the switch at the master cylinder. i just figured the brake lights would be contolled by the switch on the pedal. as for the turn and tail lights they are working but they are seperate from the brake lights. i will check the master cylinder switch tomorow after work. Thanks
on my 94 I lost the brake lights and it turned out to be the switch, on my 04 F350 I lost my control of the cruise and the lights worked but it also turned out to be the switch. Check the most common item 1st (switch) which is subject to daily use and can fail the easiest. See if you have power in then poweree out when the switch is depressed. Even on the 04 many said it was a switch on the master etc, turned out to be the pedal switch!
