Thinking about swapping the 5.4 gasser to a cummins one day. Just wondering how many have done it and the result. Was it worth it and how much did you end up spending?
The other plan is to pull out the 5.4 and completely rebuild it with new internals. Im thinking the cummins would be alot more power for the money though.
Thanks, i've been looking at fordcummins.com there are a few things extra to buy like a radiator from a 6.0, intercooler, and exhaust. I've also seen complete rebuild kits fairly cheep if I had to rebuild a cheap engine. I'm not too fond of the 6.0, and have thought about a 7.3, but the cummins sounds like a better overall deal to me.
Give these folks a shout. They're in Leon, VA between Charlottesville and Culpeper on Kirtley Road just off SR 29. They've been doing 5.9 swaps in-house there and they're selling them on the lot. I'm sure they could give you an idea of what's involved, price estimate if they do it or you do it, etc. They actually have a 2000 Excursion in stock now with a 5.9 in it. Worth a look anyway.
Tylus, I have actually thought about doing something like that, but not with swapping out for a hd engine. Never thought of a hd swap. It would be something different too. You know what trans those use?
You could adapt a tranny for it and use the 4r in the truck. I would expect to spend 10k minimum on the swap. Depending on how it is done more for turn key. There are a lot of options in the cummins dept. 4bt, 12v, 24v, cr5.9 and 6.7.. Then what tranny to use be it dodge, ally, nv4500, nv5600, 4r, 5r etc.. If your luck and have a lot of time you could theoretically sell your parts and buy good used parts for the swap. Some claim the swap can be done on the cheap but you will be doing a lot of the hunting fabbing yourself. I would bet you will need to at least upgrade to a heavier rate front spring. Then a motor, adapters, rebuilt tranny and wiring at minimum

I know nothing about transmissions. I know your truck has a 4r100. Mine is the Torqueshift 5r100? About the extent of my knowledge. Drop into the HD section of FTE and ask them
you don't even need to do a motor swap. If you can source a blower and pullies and upper intake, it will all bolt to your motor. Search FTE for L swaps. The 5.4 block is essentially the same throughout the years. Ford won't confirm, but the 2006 5.4 4v in GT500 has the same block (same part #) as a 2000-2002 5.4...or so I've been told by guys in the know on S197forum
Tons of guys have paved the way before you. There are entire write-ups with lists of all the parts you need depending on how you do the swap. Either a whole new motor or just top-end bolt-on.
I'm pretty "resourceful" myself and priced out this swap before. I don't remember the exact #, but I was looking at a little over $2k using all factory OEM parts for a L or HD.
about a week ago a guy on here posted about custom tuning on his 5.4 superduty that he installed Trick Flow heads, cams, and intake. I searched their site and seen it and was going to do the same thing but the original OP in that post never answered back, or i just missed it with the 20 new pages since i read it last week....
I would be really interested in reading that. Expecially since it would probably be cheaper to just stay with the 5.4. How do you like the SCT tuner, did it make much of a difference?
heres the post but the guy never got back on since then? And i like the SCT that mike sent me, i have 87P, 93 tow which im getting changed to 87 tow im sick and tired of evertime i need to tow something heavy i have to get a full tank of 93 to use it, and i have 93P that i havent used yet at all. The truck pulls so much harder even with the 87P tune, the trans is nice with the upgrades in shift pressure, timeing between shifts, only thing my TQ lock up i think is almost like stock? i feel it locks up around the same time as it did factory but the way the truck shifts now i holds a little longer going down hills and the truck doesnt downshift as much which is alot nicer
Sounds like a nice investment. Less pointless downshifts would be very nice, they get annoying sometimes. Like when your already up the hill. My friend has one for his mustang and loves it, didnt know how it was for the trucks.
my upgrades are in my sig and i like the 5.4 50% of the time. normally im fine with it but then sometimes i actually get so pissed i want to drive the truck into a tree! You can see my upgrades i have so heres a short story, my buddy has a 2004 2500HD crew cab long bed with a 6.0 in it, 4.10 gears with 6inch lift and big 35 x 15 wide toyo mud tires. The truck has stock intake exhaust and he has a superchip tuner. The last time we raced i smoked him off the line which is good for the 5.4 but at around 50-60 he cought up too me and passed me like i was standing still! I lost so much respect for my truck that day Yet i have another friend with a 2002 2500HD 6.0 4.10 gears, stock tires, intake exhaust running a superchip tuner and i beat him by two trucks ever race? So i have no idea why my buddy with 35's kills me but he does, and the stock truck i kill?
