With all the stuff I read in the 6.0 forum being negative I just thought that since my 2007 F250 just hit 137,000 I would post the problems I have experienced. The truck is used predominately for towing. Oil changed every 7,500, fuel filters every 15,000, coolant every 60,000.
29,000 mi - front axle pinion seal leaking - covered under warranty
60,000 mi - replace air filter
90,000 mi - replace batteries - $170
125,000 mi - check engine light comes on during 7,000 mi trip from TX to SC to NM back to TX. Replaced egr valve - cost $190.00.
135,000 - replaced brake pads and air filter.
Wow that is great...I hope my newly aquired 2006 (110k) is a realiable one (ill be doin all proper maintance)
My dad bought a 2004 new (which is now over 100k) & other than a new exhaust system has only required a new EGR Cooler. Hell he doesnt even do proper maintance (so he's been lucky). They are not all bad...

I think I have you beat by a long shot. 05, 4X4 Reg cab, 160,000 miles, I've replaced the Belt Tentioner @ 138k, Belt, Batteries twice, original Air Filter and original coolant until just recently. I just had (last 1,000 miles) to replace the SCT fitting and while I was there I put the sinister EGR Delete kit on it. 10,000 mile oil changes and 30,000 fuel filter changes. I flushed the Tranny at 148,000, no other service to it. I’ve had minor issues with Interior trim AC vents Radio.
The Folks that take there time to go thru this site and understand a little bit about 6.0 and its operating systems Fare way better to have a reliable truck.
From time to time I see folks come here to complain about Ford and Bad mouth the 6.0. Those folks are sometimes causing there own Greif by not taking care of it Properly.

If you think about it, three of those five are maintenance items and not really problems.

Exactly; any other truck/car/van/suv air filters, battery(ies) and brake pads are considered something you normally replace. But for some reason in the 6.0L world it's just something else "wrong with the truck". I don't have the overall mileage...but I've got you beat on the batteries & air filter. We'll see if the pads make 125k...only 18k to get there (fall of next year at my current yearly mileage).
My 06 has 201,000 just did the oil cooler and egr... Shes been great! Been learning how the engine works and fixing things before they become major issues.... Love it!
from what i hear only 02-05 6.0 were crap, in 05 the redesigned the engine with international and it has been a good enigine since, i just hope my new toy holds up like yalls.
I disagree, my '04 has been faultless, no failures in 133K when I bought it, I ran the OASIS..............clean sheet!
I just did all the preventative maintenance and reliability mods, EGR delete, new oil cooler, Flush/ELC, coolant filter, CCV mod, clean turbo (was working fine) new belt,
blue spring in regulator, 6.4 banjos, new Thermostat. All new Motorcraft filters, Rotella 5W-40 T-6
IMO the rep that the early 6.0's got (they didn't make an '02 model) was largely due to some quality control issues at the factories and lack of training (troubleshooting, etc) at the dealerships. Yes there were issues w/ the early ones, but they were largely good engines then as well as now (again IMO).
Ford did make improvements: They made injector longevity improvements, suspension and brake system upgrades, HPOP changes, water pump changes, and the most needed - sensor and wiring/connector upgrades. Still they lost ground in the arena of HPO system leaks with the 05 upgrades and the redesigned EGR cooler was shown to be way less robust. Software improvements and EGR system improvements happened for most model years.
Know the weaknesses and address them and you will be rewarded.
I know people shy away from the term "bulletproof", but improvements can be made and they don't have to cost an arm-and-a-leg.
