Hi I'm new here
I just bought a 1988 Ford f150 4x4 custom. I have a few questions. All I know is that it is a 4.9 std 4spd with od. What I would like to know is the axle types f&r and the t-case tranny model's.
What are the the big problems I should look out for?
Also how much can I use this truck for towing.

i hope you have as much fun here as I do
your tk prob has a dana 44 front, and either a 9 inch or a 8.8 ford rear. the way to tell the difference between a 9in and a 8.8in is that the 8.8 has a rear cover like a chevy, and the 9in is bolted in from the front. there should be a tag on the rears telling you what ratio you have. also, the tranfer has a tag telling you what it is. the transmission has its id stamped or cast onto the housing soewhere.
if your towing light loads, it should be ok, but I wouldnt hitch a 5th wheel to it.

Trans code is on the door jamb sticker at the bottom in fine print - post it & all the other codes there. The axle code will tell your ratios.
You'll almost certainly have trouble with the ignition module on the distributor, and if you have flange-type locking hubs (chrome goes all the way behind the rims to the lug studs), you should wheel lightly.
