A4LD Pump Replacement

My tranny decided to stop working completely a few days ago, no forward no reverse. Happened on the way back from a 5 hour trip. At first it started slipping in 1st coming off a stop, I made it home and parked it for the night, came out in the morning and made it a block and it stopped working completely. I changed the fluid and the filter, checked the fluid level and that was good. I checked the vaccum and that was good. Then I went to check the pump by removing the line going to the tranny cooler and no fluid was moving through it while the car was idling or in gear. I think that the pump went bad. The van isn't worth getting the tranny rebuilt, so how hard is it to replace just the pump myself? Does anyone have a manual for the transmission I could see, or could tell me how to do it and if I need any special tools?

PS. If anyone has any other guesses as to what the problem might be let me know.

Thanks,
Chris

You might want to check line pressure, and see what it does as you increase RPMs. I've had a pressure regulator valve hang, which gave very low pressure at idle - you had to rev it up to get it to engage 1st gear. This cured itself after a few miles and never recurred. Check anything that might affect line pressure.

Another possibility is that the valve body is loose and is leaking or has blown a gasket.

Replacing the pump is generally fairly easy, since its the first thing that comes out of the case, but you do have to drop the tranny.

Replacing the pump is easy, but pump alignment is critical if you seperate it from the converter housing and they dont come together unless you buy used parts. There are special alignment tools but the converter itself can be used to line the pump up.

ranges from $50 to $100 depending if they can do some other things. Rebuild gasket kit is under $30 new pumps $110 or internals$20-30 Manual is available at www.bulkpart.com for $16. I've built all of my own tools and should try some backyard alignment method sometime for grins. Don't think your pump just went. I'd pull it apart first. Say, you didn't change the filter recently? Some people have installed these wrong and they drop down sucking in air.
