Transmission just up and quit

Recently bought (10/15) a 2004 E350 service body van. 150k miles, 5.4 w/auto transmission. I've driven less than 1000 miles since buying it but have just recently made this my primary work van. The van has run like a champ, pulled great...comfortable... anyway, I'm driving it last Friday and I stop for gas. When I went to pull away from the pumps I put it in drive and all the sudden I don't have any go power. No previous slipping, no warning, nothing. Just no go. I dropped it down into 1st gear and it engaged and then I moved it back to drive and, as long as I didn't take it out of gear it was fine.

Got it home and went out an hour later to check for leaks....NONE. No drips, trails, wet spots, nothing. Checked the dipstick and it showed nothing, completely off the dipstick. Just for chuckles, put the van in reverse, went right in, backed out of the drive....no forward momentum. Put it in first like before and worked ok. Went and put in 2 quarts of fluid, still not on dipstick. Next day added 2 GALLON JUGS and STILL not on dipstick!!! Still no forward momentum unless it slides into 1st and you keep going into drive.

On the way back up the driveway the last time I noticed a trail now - it appears to be from the rear of the tranny but I can't tell.

IF it was that empty why didn't I have a slipping transmission long ago?? Where did the fluid go?? It's not in the radiator system either - already checked. HOW DID THIS TURD JUST UP AND STOP ON ME!!?? Sorry but this is driving me nuts. Is there any other explanation other than a toasted transmission??

I'm hopeful that someone has had a similar experience that can give me some insights.

The tail-shaft housing bushing is what supports the yoke, when the bushing wears out the rear seal fails and all the fluid runs out..

What caused the tail-shaft bushing to fail ?
bad U-joints, physical abuse like racing, the drive-shaft itself being out of balance..

Fix the problem whatever it may be, fill it with fluid, check and adjust the TV cable, see if it works..

With a blown rear seal it's going to pump fluid out almost as fast as you pour it in..
