I just rebuilt a E4OD in a 1991 F150 4x4. When driving the truck the transmission gets so hot I cant even hold my hand on the trans pan, is this normal?
I did cut the cooler/heater out of the radiator and added its own separate air cooler (for the trans). I live in Conway, South Carolina so its not cold enough for the heater.
Nope that's too hot, are you sure you have good flow out and back from the cooler?
Did you check for codes see if the computer tells you anything.
Hows it shift, does TCC lock up like it should? slipping even though locked?
There is no light on so I didn't check for codes, and I haven't checked the flow out back from the cooler.
But the trans shifts perfect, couldn't ask for it to do any better. The torque converter locks up.
Also drove it again today (yesterday was the first day since rebuilt) and it shifted and operated even better. The trans was still got hot, but when I parked it (after 20min drive) I could hold my hand on the trans pan.
the trans section of the radiator isn't a heater,it's a cooler.
you should install a trans temp gauge, and hook the cooler back up.
the flaw with running only a air cooler is that idling, driving slowly below lockup speeds, the trans likely will not cool properly.
