BLUE DEF Container

All,

I've just had my truck a couple months now and it is indicating 200 miles until out of DEF. Bought some today but can anyone give me advice on how to "operate" this container and spout? I want to minimize or prevent spills since I know this stuff is corrosive. Owner manual does not deal with this particular type of container and spout. No instructions on carton. Probably should have been picky about what container I bought. Any advice appreciated.

Mike

The ford container is supposed to be spill proof but we use that at work.

All u do is screw the nozzle on, put into the BLUE def hole and pour. Very important u pour into def tank and not the fuel tank. With 200 miles left, it should take all of that if it is 2.5 gallons. That looks like the size of it but not sure.

I did not think it was corrosive. I thought it is basically sweat and water but I could be wrong.

Made me look up MSDS> It is listed as a slight irritant with a ph rating of 7-9 so I was wrong. If u spill any, wash it off and all should be good.

That is the same kind I use for my work truck and the jug is a bad design because it has no breather (air hole) and sometimes they will drip a little and sometimes they won't. I would recomend holding a whad of paper towels under where the tube screws onto the jug just in case it will only be a few drips if anything. I don't know what it will do to paint but it will turn a shinny aluminum tank a white color like acid does. If you get some on the paint just quickly wipe it off.

Your tank should take two of those, 5 gallons.

I always just screw the spout on as tightly as I can without over tightening, lift up the jug and pour it in the DEF tank. Most important thing, use a pocket knife and slice a hole so that air can get into the jug while the fluid comes out. I always run my tank pretty low like you have so that the truck takes the whole 2.5 gallons and I don't have to worry about any left over with a hole punched in the jug.

And then, I use a hose to rinse off any drips. Keep your feet away and don't wear your nice loafers unless you like little white spots on them.

Jndinmo the jug has a spot where you can take a knife or screwdriver and vent it. I poke a hole in mine and have never spilled a drop.

It's also designed to never have to take the plastic jug out of the box. There are tear-out areas that expose everything necessary. I just cut off the little vent with a pocket knife and fill away. Like Rusch said, I've never done a complete refill without having some drip on the ground. Not a big deal though. Just swipe off the little white specks and you're good to go.

FYI the containers are designed NOT to have a vent for a reason. When the container needs to suck in air, the air comes through the spout. When the DEF tank is full the spout is blocked and can not get more air to allow more fluid to spill all over the truck.

I've been using that brand since my truck was new. Sometimes you spill some or the tank overflows. The DEF is water soluble just wash off any that spills onto the finish with water.

Some of those leak, some don't.
Some spouts tighten and stop, some over tighten and don't seal correctly.
Blue DEF cap, right side of fuel door is your only focus; don't want this in your fuel.
Even I double check myself as I lift the jug to the truck.

If possible, do this in a quiet area so you can hear the tank fill.
I usually fill it in my garage and you can hear what's going on with the tank.
The time I over filled mine, there was too much noise and I couldn't hear when it was full.

AS Keper05 said make sure that you fill in a quiet place. You can hear when the tank is full. Don't try to top it off as I did the first time or it will overfill and spill. I fill my DEF tank when it gets less than 1/2 full with one container but that is just my personal preference.

Thanks for Responding

Thank you all for responding. That is the reason I like this forum as you are patient with the new folks.

Emboldened by your information, and with the bravado afforded by one good Egg Nog this morning, I went out to the driveway and rigged the container up and refilled. No problem. After starting to pour, I made things easier by poking a couple holes in the container with my pocket knife.

The only surprise is that it only took one of the 2.5 gal. containers to fill. I thought that the reservoir was 5.0 gal.. The display on the information center had initially indicated 500 miles of DEF left. When I filled this morning, it was down to 200 miles of DEF left. Do you think the sensor is messed up? Am I missing some information on my message center?

Thanks again to ya'll.

Mike. It may have got a air pocket when filling. When you poke holes in jug it can go in to fast and cause that.I'd try to put more in it without poking holes. And you may have to drive it abit for it to figure out how much is in there.

Congratulations on your first DEF fill! Funny how the Dodge crowd makes such a big deal out of it.

You probably filled the tank to the level just above half way which will indicate full on the information display. It won't be long until you'll be able to see "DEF less than half" message (or whatever it is) and you can put in another box to top it off.

I agree Epic, it's funny.
The DEF grief I sometimes get (from Chevy owners too) is just annoying now.
I realize GM uses DEF too but seems some don't know that.
"So you have that there Ford that only gets 2000 miles on that urea stuff, huh?"
No......depending on how the engine is worked it's still much more than 2000 and it's a non-issue to add fluid.

Anyways, glad it was a success for you.
I have tried without poking a hole and with.
I tried with a hole the other evening when I added 2.5 gal.
Didn't run into an issue but I knew it would take a full jug.
