I watched 3 guys that work next door to us fill their Chevy DEF tanks the other day. The fill nozzle for the Chevys is under the hood and up against the firewall. Those guys were bitching up a storm about having to do this. They said "only in California, its all about the money". I said "wait till your smog test comes around" with a laugh. He says "no smog, its a diesel'. I told them, "well you will have a surprize coming in 4 years then".
4 years. Heck I had to smog test mine this past summer to renew it's annual registration. It's every other year here, Depending on if you have a odd or even model number year.
to the OP. If you live in a very cold climate. Don't fill the DEF into the filler tube. DEF can freeze at 12° and while the tank can tolerate that, The filler tube has been said tol crack. The Ford bottles have a breather tube that prevents overfilling the tank by not allowing any air back into the jug when the tank is full.

California it's every other year too, except for the first 4 years on a new vehicle.
After that we also have to smog to get reg every 2 years.
I've never had a problem filling DEF and would like to second Fulltimer50's comment about filling. If you pop a vent hole, it's much easier to have an overflow mess. If you wait a few extra seconds for the nozzle to work, it makes sure you don't overflow the tank. I do pop an air vent on it, but only when I'm sure it's going to take the whole bottle. If I'm going for a complete fill, then I just wait the extra little bit and the overflow is avoided.
I did my first fill, and did NOT get it all over the place.
I'm going to keep the bottle and tube regardless of what the label says (do not reuse container)... I've just rinsed it with water and left it for next time, when I will probably get whatever cheapest DEF is around and reuse the fill tube and possibly the container if the threads don't fit.
I never got a message on the screen, but I noticed it said less than half full when I was going through the screens to get engine hour count and idle hour count at the end of the month for log purposes.
Probably means like don't reuse it for drinking water or any consumption material. Everything says that, windshield washer fluid in the same containers also has that warning on the label.
Trent310 ..... You could not have read the instructions ..... It says truck must kept clean at all times, especially before filling up DEF.
I apologize if the picture of the dirty truck has been disturbing to you. I had washed it less than 5 days ago, but since Winter cannot seem to decide if it is going to show up yet, the outdoor temperature was an unusually warm 11°C on the day I did the DEF fill (2012-01-04). This resulted in prior precipitation becoming a liquid, rather than remaining a solid as it is expected to be this time of year.
