Put in some standard replacement Warn Hubs a month or so ago when one of my originals failed. Haven't needed the til recently, but discovered they aren't working.......
Took off the face plate, and it appears that the plunger isn't pushing the hub in far enough to engage, i can make them engage with my fingers though.
A couple years ago I scored a set of Warn premium hubs off CL. Great shape but they were completely disassembled. When I installed them, they did the same thing yours did. The ring gear/cog wheel was not engaging. If I remember correctly, it was the orientation of the springs I needed to correct. Might be worth a shot to check yours to see if there is any other way they could go together.
Alvin, thanks for the idea, will take a look at the springs for sure. These were new in the box from a parts store, but who knows if they were a return or what. seems like they need to move another 1/4 inch or so to full engage. As easy as the install was I was suprised there were any problems at all, pretty basic setup.
On a second note, these aren't the premiums hubs, just the plain old oem standard replacements, not that it should make any difference i would think.
I sent an inquiry to Warn, they said there isn't any adjustment on the hubs. They want me to take them off the truck and see if they engage that way as the next step. Unfiortunately, that was last Friday, and here it is Tuesday and I haven't had time to remove one yet, as they both are doing the same thing. As soon as my J O B doesn't require 16 hour days, I will be taking them off to test. Will post back with what goes down, weather they get fixed, warrantied, what have you.
So I finally had time to take the hubs off and see what was up. When I removed the inner part behind the lock ring, it came out in pieces, both sides. After I looked at them, the lock ring on the back side of the internal hub came out on both hubs. Further inspection found that the groove for the lock ring was not machined deep enough, barely scored. So the first time I engaged the hubs, they blew apart. Took them back to local parts store I bought them from and they exchanged them, no downtime. So thats the story, this one is closed out finally.
Yeah, I've owned many sets of Warn hubs over the years and they have never gave me any problems. I wonder if that was a return set to the parts store and someone messed with them. Then again, it's not impossible for a bad set to sneak through the system.
I too have had many sets of Warn hubs, and never an issue with any. I think this set just snuck through the QA/QC checks somehow. None the less, contacting Warn was easy, quick responses, even though i was slow to work through it. Same with Car Quest, no issues with replacing them. First calss all the way. One bad set out of thousands is nothing to complain about I guess.
I have a set of Warn prem hubs and my mech says the slip ring keep popping out? Will that make it bind more than usual turning in 4x4/
also even when I switch in out of 4x4 in cab it still stays locked?
Welcome to FTE.
I am not an expert so take this as such. From what I understand you are not supposed to run with the hubs engaged unless it is in 4 x 4. The hubs engage the axle and the shifter in the cab engages the trans.
Not sure about the slip ring.
