I've got an '02 E450 Super Duty DRW 16' box truck that rumbles something awful after around 50mph. I've had the wheels balanced and re-balanced, but it' still pretty nasty. I worried it might be the rear end but then noticed that the rear wheels are mismatched. The outside one has the 8 round vent holes and the inner one is the basic steel wheel with the 4 oblong vents. I'm assuming that this is throwing off the geometry at higher speeds, and causing the rumble. Sound right? If so, where can I get myself another 8-hole inner wheel so I can solve this problem?
I don't know if this helps because mine is a 350 DRW but my outer wheel is the nice aluminum wheel and the inner is just a steel one. Not sure on the hole design as mine just have the 4 oval "holes". I guess that's what you get on a DRW 350, one nice wheel and just a steel inside wheel.
most likely a bearing , pull the rear end cover and inspect. look for metal shavings, and see how the bearings feel when spinning. Check axle bearings, and carrier bearings, and the pinion bearing. Try to lift the axle shaft and check for up/ down play.
Different material rims don't mater as long as the tires on them are the same. Lot of semitrucks have that kind of set ups.
Some big tire shops have machines that can spin-balance wheels on the truck. That would find what your problem might be.
Sounds like the outer wheels are the correct ones that come on the E series chassis and the inner wheels sound like they're the ones that come on the F series chassis.
Do the E series and F series both use the same lug nuts - conical vs. flat washer?
