Another FICM

I think I already know the answer to this question, but I would like a second opinion. I would hate to have my truck down for 3 to 4 days and be out the money on an unnecessary repair.

I am running a 2006 F250 4x4 FX4 with the 6.0 L diesel engine (with original batteries). A few weeks back, when it started getting colder around here, I noticed (on my edge CTS) that the battery voltage was getting down to around 11.5 volts after I would start the truck, and before the alternator would kick in. I figured I better start looking at the FICM voltage to make sure it isn't hurting it. So I started turning on the EDGE CTS monitor before I would turn the key on. You can tap the screen when you get in the truck, and wait until it almost starts up before turning the key on. When I turn the key on I was seeing FICM voltage in the lower 40s.

I went to the local parts shop, where I unhooked each battery so they could test them. They said they tested fine, but I don't think the kid working there really knew how to use the tester. He was only pushing the load switch for a second then reading it. I think you need to draw on them for at least a few seconds before you read them. Either way, so much for a free test. So I figured that I would just go ahead and replace the almost 6 year old batteries.

The voltage after the alternator kicks in runs around 13.9 to 14.2 volts.

I went to Sears and got two new Platinum batteries. My wife about shot me when I told her the price. Anyway, now after I start the truck the voltage is still above 12 volts. I don't think there is a problem with the batteries. So I have checked the FICM voltage and I am still seeing numbers in the low 40s. They work back up to 48 v pretty quickly after starting.
<O</O
Are these numbers in the low 40s normal while the glow plugs are on?
<O</O
If I don't start the Edge CTS up early, until it (the CTS) turns on after I start the truck the FICM voltage is up around 48. Is checking the FICM voltage with the Edge CTS ok, or should I pull the cover and check it with my volt meter.
<O</O
I see in some FICM testing procedures that they tell you to unhook the glowplug feed wire. Is that the wire bolted to the positive post clamp? Should I even check it with these numbers?
<O</O
The truck is currently starting fine, and runs great with the FICM voltage staying above 47 while running. No codes ect.
<O</O
What do you guys think???

Thanks for any help.

Since I got mine repaired it is rock steady at 48V no matter what. Seems like the conventional wisdom is if it is under 45V at ANY time, it is time for a repair. Send it to FICMRepair.com, they'll take care of you! I would get it taken care of before it gets worse and fries an injector or two.. Mine was getting down much lower than that at start up (29-34V) and running rough for a few seconds, but it could be only a matter of time before that happens to you. have you checked to make sure there isn't any chaffing of the harness and that everything is plugged in tightly?

I've noticed that data from the OBD port isn't there when cranking the truck, but should be accurate immediately before and after. If you are seeing 40 volts while the glow plugs are on, either before or after starting, you probably have a problem. It still wouldn't hurt to get into the FICM and actually use a DVOM directly to test it.

But, I would still bet you are going to need a new or repaired FICM.
