transmission selection

hi everyone, im building a ford 351w, i dont know how much power its gonna have but its gonna have an edelbrock 600cfm, edelbrock performer intake, stock ported heads, headers, edelbrock performer cam, 9 to 1 compression and a compleatly new bottom end, im going to put this engine in some old ford truck and im trying to figure out what transmission to get, i want an automatic, perferibly with overdrive. the truck is gonna be a big 4x4 so i want something that can take alot of abuse, anyone got any ideas?

It depends on what it is going into. You can get a C4 or an AOD with the small block bolt pattern, but they aren't really suited for a full size truck. They can be built to handle a lot of power though.

The strongest Ford auto would be the C6. It is capable of handling major power and to live in a full size truck.

If you want OD, the E4OD is the trans of choice. You will need a stand alone ECM to control it though.

a well built aod would be my choice. They can be built to take plenty of abuse and no computer needed.
