Just picked up a 79 ford f250 4x4 with a 429 out of a late 60's thunderbird. It has a hei distributor in it. 750 edelbrock carb, headers, aluminum intake, and a edelbrock performer cam 7167 556 lift.

Truck loads up at idle and low rpm, but clears up around 2500 to 3000 rpm and pulls great. Also when it gets hot it doesn't want to crank over. Truck has been sitting for years.
I was gonna change plugs first. What are the best plugs to run with the mods listed.
Second what should the ignition timing be for this motor.
Third I am gonna mess with the carb. If the carb is junk what would you recommend.
Kinda what I'm thinking. Guy I bought the truck from forgot to tell me it had a 3200 stall converter. Guy said when it was fresh and tuned right it ran a 14.2 in the 1/4 on 40 inch boggers and 4.10 gears. Also ran mud drags with 5.38 gears and the front tire use to come off the ground. Still gonna play with the timing, throw some plugs in it and try and tune the carb.
It started hot every time. That is good. But still not running good down low. I think it is loading up, smells like raw fuel and it puffs a little smoke until you get to higher rpms. Should I advance the timing a hair more. I lost some vacuum too.
Sounds like your down to carb tuning. You need to set your idle mixture. You alsomay need to change to leaner metering rods and possibly jets depending on what's in it now. Go to the Edelbrock site for the manual for your carb.
