hi everyone, im building a ford 351w, i dont know how much power its gonna have but its gonna have an edelbrock 600cfm, edelbrock performer intake, stock ported heads, headers, edelbrock performer cam, 9 to 1 compression and a compleatly new bottom end, im going to put this engine in some old ford truck and im trying to figure out what transmission to get, i want an automatic, perferibly with overdrive. the truck is gonna be a big 4x4 so i want something that can take alot of abuse, anyone got any ideas?
yes the c-6 is a good one. robs a few extra ponies though but will take all you can give it. problem is no overdrive. i am no expert but i think the newer trannies with overdrive might have/need electronic/computer controls so if its going to go in an old truck it may be a headache. better check on that though. the c-6 will go right in. what gears are you running? maybe you don't need the o/d.
you can use an AOD thats cable controled. 83 to around 89 from ford trucks. As far as the carburater goes you would need to find an adapter of some sort so that it could hook up. Ive just seen an magazine that had a kit of some sort for a carb type set up.
"cant remember the magazine though" as far as punishment the AOD weakest links are 3-4 gears. here is what I have seen done with these transmissions for better longevity. they take out the two piece input shaft and replace it with a one piece, and then replace it with a non lock torque converter. also the overdrive drum is replaced with 2inch vs. a 1.5inch. this alows for another clutch disc to be installed. what the hell does all this mean! torque is multipied at the 3-4 gears and also makes the transmission alot more durable. HOWEVER! this can get pretty expensive to build. but this is just of you plan to torture the truck
alot, if not i had my tranny from last for 235.000 miles! they are in my opinion good trannys. hope this helps!
