285/75 or 315/75?

I dont know if i should get the 285/75 or 315/75 tires because ive been told that with the larger tires i will be getting much less power to them. I have a 1990 f250 4x4 with a 351 engine and 410 axles. I know the enginge is alot weaker than it once was but i also like the look and offroad performance of a wider tire so i am debabting what size to go with. any suggestions?

I have 315/76/16's on my 95, but they came on the truck so I can't say for sure what they do for the power. I do know that in over drive at 55 mph, the rpm's are a little low, so if I am trying to watch my speed (55 mh) and have any load, a lot of times I have to run in 4th gear. I have been looking at tires, but I want to go thinner, less snow and mud to push. I looked at 285's, but I am leaning toward 255/85/16's which are around if not slightly taller than the 285's, but only 10" wide instead of around 11.2" for the 285's and 12.4" for the 315's. I had a 87 F250 for a while with 235/85/16's and loved the skinny tires, they would get down and dig rather than spinning on top. The only thing I am finding with the 255's, is that there are manufacturers making them. Hope this helps.

Glad that I could help in any way. I like the way the 315's look, however I would like to get a little more power back by going a little smaller and narrower. My truck too, I am sure is down on power, as it is showing 292,xxx on the OD, but I am sure somewhere along the way, the motor has been changed, but when I don't know.

I had the same debate and ended up going with the 315/75s for the looks. Mine is a F250 SC w/460/5 spd/3.55s and even with the bigger engine the loss in acceleration was immediately noticeable. I drove it for about 8 months where I couldn't turn the wheels full lock until I finally got a lift on it about 4 months ago. Now with the lift (4") the truck looks awesome but rides like crap compared to stock. Even with a drop pitman arm it still has a bunch of bump steer that it didn't have before.

I've recieved a ton of comments on how good it looks but honestly if I had to do it over again I would have stayed stock height and done the 285s instead. Oh well. Live and learn.

Now mine is a daily driver about 6 months out of the year. If this is just a trail rig or a weekend toy then I'd say 315s all the way. If you plan on driving it a lot I'd go with 285s.

I have the 315 75-16's on my '02 PSD, regardless, with those 410 gears and a descent running 351 you shouldn't have any issues, I coulnt even tell on mine when I went from 285 75-16's to the 315's and I have the 3/4 ton 3.73 gears. Fuel economy is probably going to be your biggest issue, especially running that mid size gasser...hope my 2cents is helpful!! Your rig will look sweet with the 315's though!!

I would go with the 285s. I own both sizes on different trucks but for what you have i would stick with smaller ones. they are cheaper and fit easier and use less power.

The 285's are cheaper, you get better power/mpg, and they look good too. I'd stick with 285's.
