Battery is hot for sure. touched screwdriver to both ends and it pops so it's got juice.
when I turn the key... all i'm getting is a "growling/grinding" sound....
I don't have anyone to turn the key for me while I look under the hood but with the best of my hearing it sounds likes it's coming from the thing the battery hooks up to on the sidewall right behind the battery.
Any suggestions?
Ya'll will be sick of my questions before the end of me....But i've got to learn sometime/somehow.
that thing is the starter solenoid. Have you held a screwdriver across the lugs on that? Try that.
The grinding/growling is indicative of a bad starter.
Yeah I did and manged to get it to do the grinding sound.... i jumped as I didn't know what I was doing... I was just trying something and it made the sound.
Just to make sure everything is clear. From your first post it sounds like you think the sound maybe coming from the starter solenoid, but Poison suggested the grinding growling sound is indicative of a bad starter. The starter is down on the lower passenger side part of the engine bolted to the transmission bell housing.
I'm not trying to be a smart a$$ or anything I just wanted to make sure you knew he was telling you the sound you described maybe another part than what you thought originally.
You can always pull the starter off and have it tested at Autozone.

I knew what he was talking about. But take note the starter and the "thing" I was referring to are both on the passenger side. I just couldn't get a good reading on where exactly the sound was coming from. That "thing" was just my first guess at it as when I touched the screw driver across it the sound was made again and I didn't do it again as I didn't know if I was screwing something up by doing said thing. but it did sound like it was making the sound.
Appreciate the help though! Always good to make sure someone is clear.
Using a small piece of wire, jump 3 & 5 (number 5 is the S terminal) in the diagram; as far as the starter motor is concerned, this is the same as turning the key to START and should let you verify from where the noise is originating.
A $10 remote starter switch from any parts store is a must have item. Jumper pos batt to "S" term on solenoid and it's a one person job and no sparks. Very useful item.
the solenoid might make an aggressive fast ticking sound, if it is bad. if it is grinding it is the starter, but that clicking that the solenoid makes could be mistaken for a grinding. You should be able to tell by listening close. Mine did something sort of like this because the original 33 yo ground cable was bad. I replaced that and fixed the prob. Mine was intermittent. Good luck, but I would guess it is the starter.

I see this happen in low-voltage situations - like, say, when the battery isn't charged, or when one or more bad connections or corroded cables (or similar) are present and keeping full current from traversing through the circuit.
