I recently installed new ring and pinion (355) and a Loctrac unit from Randy's Ring and pinion.I was wondering about 2 things.
1) Everything seems to work fine,no noises or anything, but my rear diff gets so hot you cant touch it.It says in the book to drive it about 15 miles and let it cool.I did that.I have a little over 200 miles on it now. When I drive it ,it gets really hot.IS this normal for a new gear set and bearings.I went by the book when I put it together.
2) I have 33" tires but the speedometer was calibrated with my old gears (308).So how much should my speedometer be off now?
Your speedo shouldn't be off. The speedo gets it's signal from a sensor on the rear axle AFTER the ring and pinion. The only thing that will affect the calibration of the speedo is changing to a different tire height.
A few years ago I installed 4:10's an ARB and new bearings in my 8.8. I noticed the same high heat, hot enough to get burned if you held your hand on the case long enough. I asked someone knowledgeable with gear installation and I seem to recall 160-180 degrees C was an acceptable oil temp. I think I called the gear manufacturer (US Gear) and got the info. No problems yet with about 40,000 miles on them.
