I have a 250 SD 4x4 2000. the cruise control has worked forever but taking a long trip I noticed it doesnt, anymore.
I checked the fusese, it looks like it's the same one as the break lights.
I was wondering if there is a relay to this ? I couldn't find anything in the owners manual not searches here.
Look for a switch on the underside of the master cylinder toward the front of the cylinder. This is the switch that seeps fluid, corrodes the contacts and has caused fires that lead to recalls for millions of Ford vehicles for the years about 1995-2003.
The recall placed a fuse inline with the switch, which prevents the fire but does not fix the cruise not working. The new factory replacement switch is more rugged and is not suppose to leak again. The switch is ~$15 at the dealer and ~$9 at RockAuto.
If you are prepared and quick you can R&R the switch without loosing much brake fluid. You will need to bleed the brakes when you replace the switch.
You can unplug the switch and short the two wires in the plug to confirm the cruise works. If you drive it this way you will not have two factor cruise disengagement.
I have done this switch replacement on 4 Ford vehicles, two Taurus, an E350 and an F250.
Where did you find the specifics on the test procedure and is there any more to it? Mine on my '06 hasn't worked since I bought it. I replaced the brake pedal switch and was going to go after the clutch switch next but it would be nice to know if it is in fact a switch at all. My high idle doesn't work either. I looked around but couldn't find any test procedures.
Eric
The clutch switch could be causing both issues. If the PCM thinks the pedal isn't fully released, it won't allow the cruise to turn on and won't high idle.
Another thing to look for with the high idle is that the "brake" light on the dash lights when you push the e-brake down. The little switch corrodes and when the PCM doesn't have that input on the handshakers, it wont high idle.
The light on the dash that comes on when the cruise control is active. On mine its green and says "CRUISE" and is on the far right. Gas truck might be different though.

Thanks,
I have never seen that light so it must not be on the gas trucks.
I know it sounds crazy but check to see if all your brake lights are good in your third brake light. My dads truck had a burned out bulb and it killed the cruise along with it. Just something to check as crazy as it sounds.

You may have something there. My third brake light went out also. That would be cool if that was it. Thanks

Rats, I changed the bulb but it didn't help the cruise.
this is one of those issues I just cant seem to find time to get to.
Going to check it this weekend. as you can see it's MIDNIGHT on SATURDAY NIGHT.
Where does the time go ?
Anyway. MINE is NOT part of the recall. FORD is being a butt head about recalls.
The gassers DO have this GREEN indicator light...... MINE is a gasser.
From futher reading I doubt it's the switches on the stearing wheel.
Hey go to your Ford dealer. I have a 2000 F-250 and it got recalled for somthing and they also fixed all the other things on it that were on the recall list. One of them is your exact problem. I have not had a problem since with my cruise control. Hope this helps.
