Need a nicer scanner, or the scanner cord has a short in it.

Ford OBS trucks need the scanner setup different than most diesels. It uses an old "PWM" protocol to connect to the PCM.

Is your buddies diesel a Ford OBS (94-97) or something different?

Oh no he doesn't have a 7.3 he's got a worthless d-max only thing it's got going for it that it is a six speed. He use to work on nbs 7.3&6.0s an it's his scanner.

That's what I thought. Think I remember you have to set it up for non-OBDII protocol but I'll let others chime in that have actually had to set one up. Instruction manual is your friend when trying to get a scanner to work with these rigs.

The plug is called the OBDII port, the engine doesn't speak the OBDII language. You have to plug in the scanner to the port, but then adjust the settings so it reads a non-OBDII engine. The plug has nothing to do with what language the engine communicates in.

What I had thought but like I said diffrent beast then I'm use to so It would surprise me that I didn't know something. Theres nothing wrong with the truck that I can tell but wanted to double check but it keeps cutting off when the scan starts

If your just checking for codes the truck doesn't have to be running. It only needs to be running to see live data
