I have a 90 4.0 4x4 automatic transmission, whenever I use 4 wheel drive to much or trailer my snowmobile, maybe 5mi it starts to leak fluid. It has a cooler and a new super cool radiator, this is starting to get on my nerves.
Could the cooler be bad?
Thanks, Kevin
One time my friends 91, 4.0, auto,4x4, just started spilling tranny fluid all over, We couldnt find where it was comming from, but all the fluid was gone, (it was everywhere) We filled it back up, to try to find the leak and it wasnt leaking anymore. That was like a year ago, hasnt leaked since, weird. Did you service the tranny lately? If not its worth a shot.
Good luck
It was rebuilt about 8,000 mi ago, it hit's hard when it shifts in all gears. The whole under carriage is wet with ATF, I just put in 6qts and it's running fine.
Thanks, Kevin
Some (if not all) automatic trannys have vent tubes running off of them. If you drive it really hard or tow a heavy load for a while, the tranny will sometimes get too hot, which causes the fluid to expand to the point where it overflows out of the vent tube.
GM (go figure) had so many problems with this on their trucks that it became a fire hazard and they issued a recall in the early 90's. But any truck with an auto. tranny could possibly do this if the tranny is allowed to get too hot.
My 93 3.0 spewed out a bunch of fluid on me once, too. It was while towing a trailer loaded with a golf cart in the middle of summer with the a/c on and in heavy traffic. The trans kept downshifting, and then I looked in the rearview mirror and saw a bunch of smoke!
I pulled over real quick, looked under the truck and saw it was coming from the trans. I figured I blew it up, but I limped it back home 150 miles below 50 mph, with o/d and with all of the accessories turned off.
I took it to my mechanic, and he said the fliud was burnt REAL bad. He flushed it out, installed an over-sized tranny cooler, and everything's been great since.
I'm just glad I didn't ruin the trans. I learned that day to ALWAYS tow with O/D off!!!!
