Hey all, so I was pulling my jeep to an event yesterday and about 30 minutes away from home the trany started whining. So I pulled over and checked the fluid and it took a little over half a quart but that didnt seam to be enough to be running dry or anything? It does it in every gear except 4th. It goes away with the clutch in and in neutral with the clutch out so I'm almost 100% positive its not the throwout bearing which IS squeaking. That is brand new so that kind of pisses me off.
So are the bearings cooked? Or is there something I can try to help get some more life in this thing since I JUST did the 5spd swap and this was the 1st tow with it. It doesnt sound like its the transfer because the noise is too far forwards.
If it does need a rebuild who has the best and cheapest kits? I've helped rebuild a jeep manual before so I cant imagine this is much different. Just bigger everything?
alright thanks! Well that truck has had a vib that i've been trying to hunt down but it had it before the 5spd swap. New wheel bearings and ball joints. So maybe the ttb bushings but I'm doing a D60 conversion soon so I dont want to put money in the 50. So besides that vibration it normally has the shifters are pretty steady. That was one of the first things I checked when it started to make noises. I also changed gears in the transfer.
The weirdest part is it goes away in 4th gear. When I downshift and match rpms you can hear the whining start as it goes into the gear even with the clutch in it starts a little then goes away once its in gear until you let the clutch out.
Check out Page 2, post 22. RRranch just rebuilt his own trans this summer and he says there where he got the parts he used (Competition Trans in California, I think). Also, there is a link in the first page to a manual of sorts that shows exploded views and has a parts list which includes part numbers for the S421, which I believe you have if your truck is a 95.
There is another link there (on page 1 I think) to Fishmanndotcom's rebuild thread as well. Plenty there to read. That should keep you surfing for a while!
I can't say for sure, but I believe the gearing is the same, but some of the internals of the 47 are beefed up and allow it to handle a bit more torque without issues. Maybe the main bearings on the input shaft? I don't know for sure.
^^^^ Now that you mention it, the OP's issue MIGHT be related to the shifter boot. At least in part. Happened to us, where we noticed more gear noise in some gears than others. Finally realized it was based on the position of the shifter, which pulled the boot out of place when it was forward (or was it back, I don't remember). So sometimes, when the noise changes with the gear, it's not internal to the tranny, but instead it's the boot moving in and out of position. That stupid bezel/frame can crack if you so much as sneeze on it.
Beyond that, if the OP doesn't know the age or condition (or type) of fluid in the tranny now, a drain and refill would be in order. ZF REQUIRES synthetic. There's even been some talk about overfilling by 1/2-1 qt by filling from the shifter.
Nah I checked that as welll. This was loud enough when it first started that I could hear it over my stacks at 2200rpms on the interstate, the radio on and 3 of us talking haha
